What’s the future of local news? ProPublica reports that oil and gas companies are purchasing local papers and paying for coverage that kills renewable energy projects. But in stark contrast, groups like the National Trust for Local News are supporting local papers in Georgia to provide sustained local news and local reporting. For example, with NTLN's support, Dublin's Courier-Herald and the The Macon Melody now have improved online platforms, and when Helene hit, reporters sprung into action to provide urgent ongoing coverage. Despite the infrastructure obstacles, papers printed *and delivered* special print editions to cover water and power outages, road closures, and where to find food and support. Reliable, local news is crucial to the safety and well-being of our communities.

It’s not often now that the number of newspapers in America actually increases. But this week, one of the most vibrant cities in the South has a brand new community newspaper. Today our Georgia Trust for Local News is launching The Macon Melody in Macon, Georgia. The Melody is the newspaper that Macon deserves — delivering relevant, engaging, and informative community news from a bustling newsroom housed in the Reg Murphy Center for Collaborative Journalism at Mercer University. The launch of The Macon Melody is also an important milestone for the National Trust for Local News. In Macon we're harnessing our Georgia Trust team and infrastructure to build a newspaper in a news desert. It’s a major expansion of our model that will allow us to reach many more communities in every state that we serve. The Melody is already live at MaconMelody.com with the quintessential mix of journalism that makes a community newspaper unique and important. On Friday, the first copies of our beautiful weekly print edition will arrive all around Macon, hot off of our own printing press in Perry, Georgia.
