Accessibility benefits everyone! That's why I'm thrilled to celebrate CLASS's recent partnership with Global Links to promote greater accessibility in our community. Thank you, Michelle Walker, for your incredible work in building an accessible community! We were so proud to provide equipment to support this event which brought together people with and without disabilities to learn about inclusive design, accessible communities, and how we can all work together to create a more equitable world. #accessibility #inclusion #communitypartnership #bettertogether
ADA and Disability Resources Coordinator, Office of the Mayor, City of Pittsburgh, Office of Equal Protection
On a sunny Monday, May 13th, 2024, I’d had the opportunity of facilitating a disability immersion training with some of my colleagues, of our City of Pittsburgh, Department of Mobility and Infrastructure. Director Kim Lucas and I discussed making this happen. I appreciate her support! We were joined by Rush Blady, Mobility and Orientation Specialist with the Bureau of Blindness and Vision Services of the PA Office of Vocational Rehabilitation. He explained what people with low vision and blindness may encounter in the right of way. The DOMI team was eager to participate, and were interested in what our constituents with disabilities may encounter in the right of way during their travels in the city. I was told it was impactful, and I am looking forward to more trainings like this in the near future. Special thanks to @Mallory Hudson and Rebekah ("Bekah") Nesbitt for their assistance in locating and allowing me to borrow the wheelchairs, the walkers, and delivering them! [ID: First photo shows several members of the Department of Mobility and Infrastructure in the lobby of the City County Building. Second photo shows DOMI Director Kim Lucas, CPM, using a walking cane, and learning how to approach an intersection as someone who may have low vision or blindness would. She is wearing a florescent vest, black shirt and red clay-colored pants. Third photo shows Rush Blady, Orientation and Mobility Specialist as he speaks, holding a walking cane. He is wearing a blue shirt and brown pants.]

Yesterday marked the groundbreaking of the Frick Environmental Center's Outdoor Sensory Classroom and Accessible Trail. At CLASS, we were honored to contribute to the design process, taking a big step forward in creating a more inclusive space for all. The project will include an accessible public bathroom with an adult changing table and an enhanced lending library where people can rent assistive technology and all-terrain wheelchairs.
🎉 We are thrilled to announce that we’ve broken ground in Frick Park on the Outdoor Sensory Classroom and Nature Play Trail! This is a huge win for #accessibility. The project is a first of its kind initiative in Pittsburgh that will transform three acres of Frick Park into an accessible outdoor space that caters to individuals with disabilities. Inviting interaction with nature through the senses, the transformed play trail will include tactile learning stations, enhanced options for seating and rest, and accessible pathways so that everyone can access our green spaces. Thank you everyone who has been pivotal in getting this project off the ground and building momentum behind such an important undertaking, including the feedback given from persons with disabilities and their families and allies. Special thanks to our supporters and champions, including Mayor Ed Gainey, President and CEO of Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy, Catherine Qureshi, Senator Jay Costa, County Executive Sara Innamorato, Councilperson Barb Warwick, Senator Wayne Fontana, President and CEO of Clearview Federal Credit Union, Lisa Florian, MBA, Executive Director of the Down Syndrome Association of Pittsburgh Meredith Peterson, MA, and parent and accessibility and inclusion advocate, Leah Northrop. Together we can move the conversation forward on advocating for #representation and #inclusion in our city's green spaces. Let’s do this!
