Clemson IE asks that you please join us in congratulating Dr. Amin Khademi and Dr. Hamed Rahimian for receiving a grant from the U.S. Air Force Office of Scientific Research for their work on Multistage Stochastic Programs with Dynamic Learning. This proposal investigates the full potential of learning for multistage stochastic programs to tackle some of the important real-world challenges in sequential decision-making under uncertainty, especially those the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) troops face. Clemson IE would like to congratulate Arvind Kolangarakath for receiving the Sue Bogner Best Student Paper Award! Arvind Kolangarakath won the Sue Bogner Best Student Paper Award (First place) at the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society's annual meeting held in Phoenix, AZ. His work employed digital twins of both ambulances and MRI systems to identify human factors challenges in integrating these technologies. The research project uncovered several issues, including the need for specialized MRI operational skills, complexities in patient handling due to space constraints, and the necessity for training and policy development. Arvind’s work proposed potential solutions to overcome these barriers, setting the stage for further research towards the broader adoption of MRI systems in ambulances across different regions to improve stroke care. The work that Clemson University is doing to advance exoskeleton technology and make it available to a wide range of users is coming into sharp relief as Team USA goes for the gold in the Paris Paralympics. Leading Clemson’s exoskeleton research are two members of the industrial engineering faculty, Divya Srinivasan and Jessica Avilés, PhD, and a member of the mechanical engineering faculty, Ge Lv. Srinivasan and Avilés are conducting research in collaboration with Adam Gorlitsky, whose goal is to is to turn exoskeleton racing into a Paralympic and collegiate adaptive sport. We would like to congratulate our IE PhD student Rahul Narasimhan, for having been recognized as an inaugural recipient of the prestigious Thomas R Waters MSD Memorial Award, at the recent 22nd Triennial Congress of the International Ergonomics Association 2024 in Jeju, South Korea! This award is given for work that significantly advances the science underpinning physical manipulation of people and materials research. The intent is to enable scientific understanding about how the human system's interaction (physical and/or cognitive) with physical manipulation tasks could influence risk to the human musculoskeletal system. Rahul’s PhD research focuses on occupational biomechanics and physical ergonomics – he works on characterizing the effectiveness of interventions like occupational exoskeletons to reduce neck-shoulder and low-back disorder risks in surgical tasks and manual material handling, respectively. He is advised by Dr. Divya Srinivasan. His pioneering research has been supported by the National Science Foundation (NSF), SCRA: South Carolina Research Authority, and the Boeing Company. Congratulations on this impressive achievement!
