This might ruffle some feathers, but it needs to be said: When it comes to training, I think the LMFTs have it right. (By the way, hi! It’s me, Dr. Amy Fortney-Parks, creator of the Clinical Supervision Directory!) Now, I am an LPC. I like being an LPC. I believe in LPCs. I believe in what we’re doing. But LMFTs require that their supervisors only be trained by their in-house supervisors. That’s a huge difference from the LPCs and LCSWs, for whom becoming a supervisor is a much less regulated process. We already know that there is huge variety in experience, education, and preparation from therapist to therapist—and this is true, even though we have a national governing accreditation body for these. No such body exists for clinical supervision training for LPCs and LCSWs, and in my opinion, that leaves us wide open for error. That’s not to say that there aren’t fantastic supervisors out there who are LPCs and LCSWs. I’ve had some of them myself. But we would have a more complete, cohesive body of professionals if we were providing a better foundation—and that starts with training. #Therapists, what do you think? #therapy #mentalhealth #healthcare #lmft #lpc

Let that sink in. You thought the huge disparity in licensure requirements for therapists was nuts? It baffles us that there are places in the U.S. that don't require formal training for one of the most important roles in the industry. Your clinical supervisor is the most important professional influence you'll have as a therapist. We should be taking the role seriously. We should be incentivizing best practices.
