Community Legal Services is one of the nation’s most successful civil legal services programs, focusing on individual representation and systemic and law reform advocacy. CLS attorneys are nationally recognized experts in their areas of specialty. Our attorneys are regularly quoted in and contribute to local and national media such as the Philadelphia Inquirer, the New York Times, National Public Radio, and major network and cable news broadcasts. Additionally, CLS attorneys have testified before the U.S. Congress and are regularly consulted on legislation at the local, state and federal level. As I’m wrapping up my fifth week at Community Legal Services, it’s time for my second Equal Justice America fellow update. These last couple weeks, I’ve gotten to assist in cases at multiple stages in the SSI application process, from initial applications to federal court. I also had the opportunity to sit in on my first SSI hearing this past week. It has been a great experience learning about different forms of advocacy we can do for clients. Today we went on a bus tour of North Philadelphia organized by CLS, where we heard about the amazing work done by Project HOME, Project SHARE, Norris Square Neighborhood Project, and Chinatown Clinic at Church of the Holy Redeemer. Visiting these organizations and the communities they serve was an insightful experience. Below are some photos from Las Parcelas Community Garden and Open Kitchen Sculpture Garden. As we close out Pride Month, we're reflecting on the ways our social safety nets can better support and uplift queer youth. Making the process of applying for SSI disability benefits more trauma-informed is one way to do that, say CLS Youth Justice Project staff members Kynaat Mirza and Kiki Miles. “Our clients are emerging into adulthood and discovering who they are. They deserve to do that in a safe and beautiful way. Queer youth need to know there is someone rooting for them and for their successes in life," Kiki said.
