"This is why the #WoodsonCenter has spent so much time and effort to locate and resource the work of neighborhood leaders who show their neighbors what is possible not just by what they say, but by how they live." Pre-order Red, White, & Black Vol. II today! https://amzn.to/3wmym9F Today’s unsung grassroots leaders are the living evidence of the power of resilience. They use their stories of overcoming adversity and their own fallibility to help others. The organizations they create heal their communities. More than chapters to be passively read, A Pathway to American Renewal is an invitation and a promissory note that points directly to what American renewal might really involve. #WoodsonCenter Bob Woodson #rewhiteblackvol2

2023 #CAN mini-grant recipient Andrew Lee is the artistic executive director of DC Strings Workshop, a #nonprofit organization bringing music to all parts of the region in #DC, particularly underserved communities. “Music is a remedy to the challenges our young children face, especially gun violence,” said Andrew, reflecting on a tragic incident: a person had been shot on the steps outside of the concert venue where his students had just finished performing. In the city, music offers a safe haven, enabling students to harmonize from all backgrounds not just musically, but also in their shared experience. #dcstrings #woodsoncenter #communityaffiliatenetwork #minigrants #DCArts

Just over a year ago, I founded Reclaiming Our Youth Services (ROYS) in memory of my sons, Isaac and Carlton Wilson, who were tragically lost to gun violence in 2006 and 2016. After dedicating 32 years to South Carolina's public school system, I found a path to healing through community service. My commitment to making a difference also led me to serve as the State Lead for Voices of Black Mothers United, a project of The Woodson Center (formerly Center for Neighborhood Enterprise) in Washington, DC. Through this role, I empower grassroots leaders to tackle community challenges. Inspired by this work, I launched ROYS to mentor at-risk students, support grieving mothers, and advocate for violence prevention. A key part of our mission is "Healing Hearts", a virtual monthly support group specifically for grieving mothers. This initiative provides a compassionate space for sharing, healing, and mutual support. I am proud of the impact we've made in just over a year and invite you to follow the link to see our progress and stay connected with upcoming events. Your support is vital as we continue this crucial mission to reclaim our youth! Learn more and stay connected: https://lnkd.in/gDeWzKBK

My review of three intriguing new books on color blindness, and why that ideal will be hard to be realized until true equality of opportunity is achieved. “Stubborn racial disparities in outcomes are what fuels the idea that race matters most. But are any of these phenomena occurring because of skin color, either due to genetic predisposition or anti-black racism or white supremacy? Or could it be that these disparities are driven by factors that are more consequential than race?” https://lnkd.in/eDc-JjGM
