Championing Colorado's World-Class Federal Research Lab Ecosystem

About us

CO-LABS is a non-profit consortium of federal research laboratories & institutions, universities, colleges, businesses and economic development organizations that provide financial and in-kind support for programs that promote the retention and expansion of Colorado's scientific resources. From agriculture to aerospace, geology to GPS, infectious disease to quantum physics, even wildlife biology to ice cores (and more!) the range of crucial, world-class research in our state is astounding. Our members recognize the importance of science as a fundamental source of humanity's progress, as a limitless resource to provide insight and answers, and as a source of wonder that can awe and cause joy. Keeping our scientific research labs and institutes funded is a matter of pragmatism and national security as much as it is a matter of pride and inspiration. Did You Know: Federally-Funded research labs in Colorado contribute $2.6 billion/year to the state's economy and provide 17,000 direct and indirect jobs. Source: CO-LABS 2016 Economic Impact Study Through events, economic analyses, strategic communications and networking activities we work to: • PROMOTE Colorado as a global leader in research and technology • EDUCATE the public about the labs’ impact and importance of sustained funding for research • CONNECT the labs, universities and businesses to facilitate partnerships and technology transfer To learn more, visit www.CO-LABS.org.

How cool is it that University of Colorado Boulder undergrads don’t just work with LASP researchers -- they’re sometimes the lead authors on the publications!

A new Nature Communcations study—led by Max Feinland when he was a University of Colorado Boulder undergrad in aerospace engineering sciences & co-authored with assistant professor and LASP researcher Lauren Blum—reports that lightning storms on Earth can knock especially high-energy or “extra-hot” electrons out of the inner radiation belt—a region of space filled with charged particles that surrounds Earth like an inner tube. The team’s results could help satellites and even astronauts avoid dangerous radiation in space. “These particles are the scary ones or what some people call ‘killer electrons,’” said Feinland. “They can penetrate metal on satellites, hit circuit boards and can be carcinogenic if they hit a person in space.” Read more at

Tuesday October 15: CO-LABS invites you to a #wildfire mitigation event at the Genesee Fire Rescue Station, located just west of Denver. As the Winner of the 2024 Governor’s Award for High-Impact Research – Pathfinding Partnerships, the Wildfire Research (WiRē) Center (WiRē) and its partner, Genesee Fire Rescue will showcase their collaborative work and ongoing wildfire mitigation and #emergency #preparedness efforts. Nearly half of Colorado’s 2.5 million residents live in areas at high risk for wildfire. The expanding wildland-urban interface, where natural vegetation meets developed communities, faces unprecedented challenges. Adapting to this growing threat requires collaboration and investment from various stakeholders across vast landscapes. The actions of property owners in fire-prone areas are essential for reducing both property-level risks and community-level risks, ultimately decreasing the likelihood of homes burning and lives being lost. Attendees will gather at the Genesee Fire Rescue Station to learn about how the department is adapting to the increasing wildfire risk and being proactive in efforts to protect their residents. The discussion will highlight the vital role that community engagement and partnerships play in protecting the community. RSVP and info>>> https://lnkd.in/gTsiH7vM About Genesee Fire Rescue   Genesee Fire Rescue provides 24/7 fire protection and emergency medical services. The organization is a combination of paid staff and volunteers, serving a community of approximately 4,000 residents within a four-square-mile area that includes 1,500 homes, 28 commercial buildings, and 1,200 acres of open space. About WiRē  WiRē works closely with local wildfire practitioners to develop evidence-based community wildfire education programs. WiRē’s process integrates social data from residents living in the wildland-urban interface with parcel-level wildfire risk data. Projects are driven by community needs and are built upon more than 30 years of world-class fire science. In addition to addressing physical fire risks, the program uses cutting-edge social science and community engagement to tailor information to diverse audiences.
