After months of collaboration, we’re so excited to finally meet all the Working Groups in person for the first time ever in Helsinki! Joining together for the Connecting Efforts forum, facilitated by the Federation of Finnish Learned Societies, the meeting provides an important opportunity to further brainstorming and mutual learning within the CoARA community. As WGs begin to implement research reforms through their respective projects, the 13 active Working Groups will spotlight current activities and notable updates with presentations by WG Co-Chairs. Kicking off the forum, CoARA Steering Board member and Secretary General for Publication Forum at the Federation of Finnish Learned Societies, Janne Pölönen, welcomes the Working Groups in opening remarks. Program Manager, Erzsébet Tóth-Czifra, shares the vision for furture possibilities and synergies for WG projects. CoARA’s Steering Board members Elizabeth Gadd Luciana Balboa Eva Méndez Janne Pölönen Karen Stroobants and Program Manager Erzsébet Tóth-Czifra address the ongoing debate around research evaluation in a recent article from LSE Impact Blog , emphasising the need for a balanced approach that combines peer review with responsible use of metrics. While acknowledging the value of quantitative indicators, it is crucial that these metrics support—rather than drive—qualitative, expert assessments. As the research community moves towards more responsible assessment practices, collaboration between scientometricians and advocates of research reform is paramount. Together, we can develop fair, inclusive, and effective evaluation methods that recognize the full spectrum of research contributions. Join us to celebrate the European Day of Languages! Registration and further information (Zoom link is sent to registered participants): https://lnkd.in/d8zQxCD7 According to the 1st core commitment of the Agreement on Reforming Research Assessment, "changes in assessment practices should enable recognition of the broad diversity of valuable contributions that researchers make to science and for the benefit of society, including diverse outputs beyond journal publications and irrespective of the language in which they are communicated". A thematic Working Group on Multilingualism and Language Biases in Research Assessment has been established by members of the Coalition for Advancing Research Assessment (CoARA). The WG aims to raise awareness and to provide guidelines, toolbox and implementation proposal for recognizing, rewarding and incentivizing research carried out and communicated in all languages, and for addressing language biases in metrics, expert-assessment and rankings. It played a key role in drafting the Agreement: as member of the Drafting Team, through chairing the Core Group of Experts, and as a partner in the initial secretariat of the Coalition for Advancing Research Assessment (CoARA).
