  • Last year, our GCOS students made a breakthrough by developing a test to detect heartworm in mosquitoes, starting with a successful screening in rural Conway. Now, they've taken this research to the next level! 🦟✨ In partnership with All4Paws, students set up their first community heartworm screening at the rescue center this past weekend. They placed 8 CDC light traps on Saturday and collected mosquitoes the next morning, now in the lab sorting through samples. The goal? To help ensure the outdoor doggy pens are safe from heartworm! This exciting collaboration will continue throughout the academic year, keeping both pets and science moving forward! Stay tuned for updates as the research unfolds.

  • We’re proud to share that CMWS master’s student Ara McClanhan and Dr. Erin Burge, professor of marine science, have co-authored an important new paper alongside collaborators Carol Seals Price, Tanya Houppermans, and Jason Holmberg. Their research, titled "Community science informs movement and reproductive ecology of sand tigers (Carcharias taurus) off North Carolina, USA," was recently highlighted by Conservation X Labs in their Spotlight from the Field: Spot A Shark series. This study, conducted in collaboration with the Spot A Shark USA citizen science program, sheds new light on the movements and behavior of sand tiger sharks off North Carolina’s coast. By integrating artificial intelligence, this research marks a significant step forward in shark conservation. • STEM students in psychology's Principles of Learning course recently participated in a fun and insightful 'Shaping Game' exercise! 🎯 This hands-on activity helps students grasp the principles of reinforcement, showing how we can modify behavior through small, successive steps. Using training clickers, students rewarded each other's actions in a 'hot or cold' style game, guiding them to perform actions like flapping their arms like chickens, throwing away a stapler, or spinning in circles. 🐥🌀 These principles form the basis of therapies like Applied Behavior Analysis, dog training, classroom management, and even daily motivation strategies. Learning by doing is a staple at Gupta College, and our students love it! 🙌

  • 🌟 Student Spotlight: Meet Keith Bullard from Myrtle Beach! 🌊📚 Currently in their second year at Coastal Carolina University, Keith chose CCU for its close proximity to home and its perfect program fit for his career goals. 📍✨ Pursuing a double major in Math and Finance, Keith is on the path to becoming an actuary—already passing the Probability Exam! 🎓📈 Balancing coursework and grading Calculus 1 can be tough, but he manages his time wisely and makes the most of office hours. One of their favorite classes? Math 242: Modeling for Scientists, where they learned Python to tackle complex math problems and create impactful projects. 💻📊 Their advice for future double majors? Embrace the challenge! It’ll make you more marketable in the job market and will be worth it in the end. 💪🌟 Keep shining, Keith! #chantsup

  • Students from S.C.'s Successteam visited CCU and the Gupta College of Science recently to explore all of the incredible educational, social, and professional opportunities the University offers. They heard inspiring stories from our current students, who are actively involved in a variety of clubs and organizations, and even got some hands-on experience in our state-of-the-art labs. Some lucky visitors also met Ruby, our adorable resident ball python! 🐍 Successteam is a nonprofit dedicated to educational youth development through mentorship, leadership training, and community outreach. We absolutely loved having these bright students as our guests and can’t wait to welcome them back next year!
