Together with our incredible clients at Destination Medical Center and the City of Rochester, we are thrilled to celebrate the opening of Discovery Walk in downtown Rochester, Minnesota! Located near the Mayo Clinic, the site extends from the center of downtown, at our award-winning Heart of the City Plaza, through Discovery Square, and south to Soldier’s Field and to Rochester’s City Loop. The project transformed a formerly car-centric public street into a green parkway that now focuses on pedestrians and cyclists, connecting the heart of downtown to one of the city’s most beautiful parks. Our team collaborated with local public artists and embedded multiple public art works as an integral part of the design. Discovery Walk expands on the experience and insight Coen+Partners has gained working on a precedent-setting cycling and wellness corridor currently under construction in Riyadh. In each area of emphasis, we expose and enhance in-situ systems while highlighting the concept through site-specific materials, deferential textures, and supportive plant palettes. Each of our built and in-progress works represents the site history, context, and the larger architectural vision. We collaborate extensively with top design talent to create site designs integrating programmatic, architectural and ecological goals with innovation and beauty.

Coen+Partners has an extensive portfolio of work in arid climates, spanning from the large scale public landscape designed for the Sports Boulevard Foundation in Riyadh, to the natural terrain of this Arizona Residence in Paradise Valley. The sensitive and specific contexts allow us to respond in complimentary yet distinctive ways. Set within the hillside, this landscape blends into the surrounding beauty of the natural terrain. This signature home designed by Charles R. Stinson is defined by its “open arms”—two wings of the house feature expansive cantilevered decks that frame the view toward the mountain range in the distance. A simple palette of limestone and light gray granite was implemented throughout the dynamic landscape to complement the materials and forms of the house. Meanwhile, the zero-edge swimming pool reflects the sky and integrates the far-reaching landscape into the most intimate spaces of the home. Animating the property, a variety of native plants including site-salvaged barrel cactuses create a sculptural, dynamic, and sustainable landscape that celebrates he patterns, textures and colors founding the Arizona desert. #coenpartners #contextual #landscapes #cactus #pool #arizona #LandscapeArchitecture #AridDesign #SustainableDesign #DesertVibes #ArizonaHomes #ParadiseValley #ModernArchitecture #NaturalTerrain #OutdoorDesign #LuxuryLandscapes #EcoFriendlyLiving #NativePlants

We are excited to join New York Botanical Garden for its 26th Annual Landscape Design Portfolios Series. On October 29, join Shane Coen for a virtual discussion about his career path, recent works, and how Coen+Partners aims to redefine how we interact with people and place, and bring earth and cultural equity to the forefront. He will illustrate our firm’s design evolution through different project scales, from Heart of the City in Rochester, Minnesota to Sports Boulevard, a transformed transit corridor in Riyadh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. He will also share insight into an equity-based urban planning project, Healing Landscapes, which proposes a new lens and method for planning open space systems in our cities. Among our national and international public realm projects for governmental agencies, the US Land Port of Entry in Warroad, Minnesota creates a peaceful, secure 24-hour gateway and crossing at the United States-Canada border. Celebrating its fifteenth anniversary in 2025, the landscape and architectural designs by Coen+Partners and Snow Kreilich Architects were established with a series of horizontal interventions highlighting the distinctive vernacular architecture of the region. Our simple, repetitive, and coherent forms reflect the expansive, flat, glacial Lake Agassiz plain and the Laurentian Mixed Forest region of northern Minnesota. Building and parking lot runoff is captured in a filtration system, and reconstructed wetlands are seeded with native wet prairie grass. The strategic use of native plantings eliminates the need for ongoing maintenance while paying homage to the greater Upper Midwest landscape. Last week Shane Coen expanded his 15+ year collaboration with leading landscape architecture CEOs on a roundtable to address and advance industry-related issues and opportunities. One of 26 CEOs representing some of the world’s most progressive landscape architecture firms, Shane pledged Coen+Partners’ goals to work towards making landscape architecture a zero-emission profession by 2040. “This is a really big deal,” said American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) CEO Torey Carter-Conneen. We’re excited to share one of our latest projects, Simply Shenandoah, which marks our first project in Virginia! The 640-acre nature retreat is set to open in a mountainous region on the East Coast. Our role was to lead the master plan and build a team of passionate architects and engineers that shared the project’s values. Part of the process was working with several Indigenous people to find the spiritual center of the site and inform the design and master plan. Core principles of the all-encompassing concept are transformation and regeneration of oneself, while preserving the topographical features and existing trees of the surrounding landscape. Minimal disruption to what exists is complemented by the master plan, which creates an immersive journey through nature to many indoor and outdoor experience areas, from ceremony and wellness buildings to fire pits. The integrated campus is focused on renewable energy and sustainability with an innovative solar micro-grid design that recycles and loops, creating a fossil-free environment that abides by Simply Shenandoah’s motto: “Where Nature meets Nurture... Vacation meets Transformation.” Visit https://lnkd.in/gBdba7Q7 to see & learn more. #healinglandscapes #coenpartners #wellness #healing #nature Team: Olson Kundig, Marlon Blackwell Architects Renderings by Olson Kundig. Healing Landscapes is a concept that Coen+Partners is spearheading to redefine how we interact with both people and place. Stemming from dialogues about equity, accessibility, and harmony, we strive to understand the stories and histories that define cities and communities while tackling complex issues that affect downtowns, campuses, and infrastructures across the U.S. if not the world.
