Crypto’s Catapult! Bitcoin ETFs provide a familiar first step in the evolution of the financial system. Institutions are embracing crypto. Read on… You have every right to be confused. Don't dwell. Markets do that to the best and brightest. Trading profits are especially damaging to the investor psyche, leaving them vulnerable to the market’s invisible hand of humility. Fear not. Bitcoin ETFs aren’t about prices up or down in the short term. They’re a step advancing the financial system to provide better, cheaper, faster services to the ultimate beneficiaries: PEOPLE But if it’s about “the people,” then why is the new crypto narrative centered on institutions? Well, institutions dominate financial assets. Yes, crypto technologies hold promise of more financial independence. But that’s not where it starts. Progress starts from a familiar place – and now institutions can easily access bitcoin on behalf of the individuals they have the privilege to serve. Institutions are also seeing the bigger picture – change is good (and inevitable). There are $157 trillion financial assets in the US economy. Improving the efficiency of managing those assets will yield massive benefits. Businesses will gain access to cheaper capital. Lower costs will push prices down for consumers. Bitcoin is now in the investment mainstream. Logic drove it. Hard work will propel an update to the financial system. Our Digital Pulse says so. Read on… Suspend judgment. It’s hard to do. We all have priors disguised as philosophies. They are often excuses for judging, often harshly...an activity best reserved for the mirror. There’s no point in lamenting what should or could have happened. We are where we are. Logic prevails – it mostly does, with patience and persistence. Today marks the first day that bitcoin will be available to investors through traditional exchanges in the form of an exchange traded fund. So, Bitcoin’s digital gold is now in the financial mainstream. BTC outperformed ETH by nearly 40% in the past year, partly in anticipation of the ETF. Is it Ethereum’s time to shine? Or others? One of bitcoin’s strengths is its simple narrative – digital gold. If you need a crude valuation benchmark, comparing bitcoin’s market capitalization to that of gold is a simple starting point. It has a long way to run should bitcoin earn status as a reserve asset. Ethereum is playing the role of second-best. Upgrades to Ethereum dealt with the “sound money” policy head-on, with supply deflationary since the Sep 2022 Merge. But Ethereum doesn’t compete with Bitcoin on the sound money narrative. Its greatest hope may be to play the role of "digital oil" of the new ecosystem – the more pro-cyclical asset, with higher volatility that is not yet adequately captured in option markets. Just Do It…within the law, please. Stablecoin is making its way to the main stage for the most ironic of reasons – its inherent stability. Read on... So-called "stablecoin" central bankers say amongst themselves...to friendly audiences...feverishly nodding in agreement. I have experienced this more times than I can count in fingers and toes. (For the avoidance of doubt, I still have ten digits aside despite operating high risk equipment at a young age.) We'll see. And now we do. Fate sure does love irony. The greatest source of instability to stablecoin in the past year was uncertainty about the ability to access deposits in the traditional banking system last March. Now, stablecoin are recognized by its users as the premier narrow bank. A fully reserved stablecoin has virtually no risk of a bank run. And if those reserves are in the form of deposits at the central bank risk is literally zero. But...but...but... What if the stablecoin or the US dollar were the source of instability? Imagine a confidence crisis in an individual stablecoin. Its high velocity makes the move to an alternative swift – good collateral migrates to stablecoin where investors are confident. We lived this in 2022. Dream bigger, darker. Imagine a confidence crisis in the US dollar more broadly. More complicated you say? Yes and no. In the case of a currency crisis, users are swapping US dollars for hard assets like gold. Welcome to the case for “flatcoin” - a move away from fiat currencies.
