About us

We are Colonna's. Colonna’s Shipyard, Inc. is a diversified industrial company, with multiple divisions and affiliates delivering the highest quality ship repair, machining, and steel fabrication services to both the commercial and government markets. Colonna’s Shipyard, Inc. is located in the historic Berkley section of Norfolk, Virginia and is the oldest continuous family owned and operated private shipyard in the United States. Founded in 1875 by Charles J. Colonna, a 26 year old ship carpenter with limited resources, the early business was limited to pier-side repairs. Within 2 years, Charles had added his first marine railway powered by two horses that had a lift capacity of about 40 tons, and he was off and running. Although over 140 years old, Colonna’s Shipyard continues to maintain its commitment to modernization, making the capital investments necessary for improvements in efficiency and productivity. Today, Colonna’s is a diverse industrial company with extensive capabilities in commercial and government ship repair, machining and large steel fabrication. Colonna’s strength is our employees. We employ the best and the brightest in the shipyard industry and we are proud of all that they do. From welders and ship fitters to government contract specialists, we have the right people in place to make sure the job is completed to the highest standards. Respect~ Pride ~ Truth ~ Family These are our CORE VALUES and the guidelines that make us a leader in our industry. We are pleased and confident in stating that our skilled employees are among the most respected experts in the ship repair industry. Colonna’s Shipyard and our affiliates are pleased to be an Equal Opportunity Employer. EOE/M/F/DISABILITY/VET

Throughout the past year, we've celebrated individuals with over 30 years of service at Colonna's Shipyard, and we appreciate your continued support in recognizing these dedicated team members. We continue this series by celebrating Kenny Mebane, current Executive Vice President of Weld America, a division of Colonna’s Shipyard dedicated to advanced technical welding and fabrication – a division Kenny himself created in 2021. Outside of Weld America, Kenny has had a huge hand in Colonna’s modernization, expansion, and work diversification. His journey at Colonna’s began in 1978 as a laborer in the Pipe Shop. From there, Kenny worked his way through the ranks and became a leadman. In 1980, he accepted a new role as leadman to the Director of Facilities, later becoming the Director himself. In this role, Kenny helped create a maintenance department, oversaw the installation of Colonna’s first and second floating drydocks, installation of additional electrical and utility services, facility expansions, and ensured assets were qualified to perform government work. In 2000, Kenny led the establishment of Steel America, a new industrial division of Colonna’s Shipyard specializing in heavy fabrication and machining, where he served as Vice President until 2021. In recent years, Steel America has become extremely successful and continues to maintain steady growth. This summary doesn’t encapsulate the full extent of Kenny’s accomplishments but serves to demonstrate what a vital role he played in Colonna’s history. Planning to retire at the end of the year, Kenny says that it’s time to spend quality time with the grandchildren. Family, a core value at Colonna’s, has always been important to him—whether it’s his family at home, his church family, or the second family he’s found at work. For Colonna’s and its divisions, he hopes for sustained, controlled growth – a steady climb. And hopes that the Company will continue to invest in and keep the people first, carrying on Bill Colonna’s vision. Kenny, Colonna’s Shipyard would not be where we are today without your leadership and dedication. Thank you for your contributions to Colonna’s overall growth and we look forward to seeing what else you accomplish before your retirement! #Colonnas1875 #RespectPrideTruthFamily #30PlusYearsMakingShipHappen #SteadyGrowth #Modernization #Expansion #Diversification
