The survey the Legal Services Corporation highlights below shows that because many people mistakenly believe they're entitled to free representation in civil cases, they don't seek help with life-altering civil matters. This can leave them without help facing eviction, lack of health care access, child custody matters and other challenges. Organizations like ours across the country are working to raise awareness and serve as advocates for people in some of their toughest moments. #legalaid #legalaidcolorado #coloradolegalservices
Just out! In the latest episode of Talk Justice released today, LSC President Ronald Flagg and The Harris Poll Vice President Kathy Steinberg discuss a recent survey on perceptions around legal aid. Lee Kathryn Rawles, assistant managing editor at the ABA Journal, hosts the conversation. “A couple of the most compelling and probably most concerning findings [were] some of the misconceptions,” says Steinberg. The Harris Poll survey revealed that 56% of Americans mistakenly believe they are entitled to free legal representation for all civil matters if they cannot afford a lawyer, a percentage that jumps to 67% among younger adults. Flagg says that he is unsurprised by these findings, noting that Americans are much more familiar with the criminal justice system than the civil and often do not understand the differences. This position would represent CLS by coordinating with external and internal partners on statewide pro bono and volunteer initiatives; creating, updating, and maintaining internal procedures, guidelines, and training materials for volunteer attorneys and non-attorneys; recruiting, training, and identifying opportunities for volunteer attorneys; establishing standards of practice for PAI coordinators who work in regional offices; and leading evaluation, planning, and reporting efforts to support CLS’s PAI work. #colorado #legalaid #remote

Last night, the Denver Bar Association gave its highest honor, the Award of Merit, to Jose Vasquez. Jose has been with Colorado Legal Services for 25 years and currently leads both our statewide consumer unit and the Denver housing unit. In accepting the award, Jose shared his personal journey as a career-long legal aid lawyer and said it is an honor to work for CLS and our clients. Jose said his belief in our clients has driven and inspired his work over many years, as he has helped keep hundreds of people out of bankruptcy and homelessness. He concluded by saying he has a lot of work left to do. Jose, it is our honor to have you with CLS, and we look forward to having you continue to light a spark throughout our organization and community for many years to come. Thank you.
