  • Steve Safier, PhD, and Melanie Rosenwasser's "Effective Partnership Strategies" class had an inspiring conversation with Katie Burke, Board member at Paycor (PYCR) and the Boston Red Sox Foundation, and former Chief People Officer at HubSpot. Katie emphasized the importance of emotional intelligence (EQ) in her role, describing HR leaders as the "emotional shock absorbers" of the company. For her, EQ is about hearing not only what’s said, but also what’s unsaid, to inform where and how HR practitioners should focus. She also champions the need to unplug and recharge to prevent burnout, highlighting the importance of holistic well-being for both employees and leaders. When asked about predictions for the future, Katie explained that it’s less about new trends or technology, and more about the mindsets required to embrace change. Rather than focusing on what won’t or can’t happen in the future (“They’ll never replace HRBPs!”), she advocates for staying open to new possibilities, asking, “What could be true?” and preparing accordingly. Katie’s advice to students and professionals? "Run your own race"—don’t measure success by external standards or social media highlights. Growth is personal, and success comes from moving at your own pace and giving yourself grace. Thank you Katie for sharing your wisdom and insights with us.

  • Marianne Bellino had the pleasure of welcoming Emily Frieze-Kemeny, Founder and CEO of Arose Group, and former Talent and Leadership Development leader from Scholastic, Avon, IBM, and Morgan Stanley, to her Organizational Strategy and Learning class. Emily shared her expertise in designing impactful learning interventions. She offered a unique perspective on how organizations can balance humanity and profitability to foster a strong culture of learning. Emily emphasized the role of learning initiatives in driving meaningful behavioral change across three key areas: onboarding, org change initiatives, and leadership development. She explained to the students that assessing organizational learning needs is an ongoing, iterative process—not just the first step. This approach is essential for designing effective and sustainable learning interventions with lasting impact. Emily was candid, acknowledging that the process isn’t always easy and challenges will present, and it is through the tough parts of learning and driving change that you find valuable opportunities for improvement. "Meeting people where they are is critical for success in any HR role," she said. "Don't force engagement on things employees don’t want; instead, focus on giving them what they truly desire."

The Hidden Power of Career Pathfinding: The Hidden Benefits of Creating Your Own Path Unconventional career moves offer many benefits that are often overlooked in traditional career planning. First and foremost, they provide an unparalleled opportunity for skill diversification. In a world where the half-life of skills is rapidly shrinking - with some technical skills becoming obsolete in as little as 2.5 years, according to IBM - the ability to quickly acquire new competencies is invaluable. But the advantages continue beyond there. Unconventional moves also: 1. Broaden your professional network across different departments and functions 2. Provide a fresh perspective and renewed motivation, combating career stagnation 3. Increase your value to the organization by making you more versatile 4. Prepare you for higher-level positions that require cross-functional knowledge Research backs this up. A study by Gartner found that employees who make these types of moves are 62% more likely to be high performers than those who don't. Furthermore, organizations encouraging internal mobility see up to 30% higher employee engagement rates. #careers #careerpathfinding #careerdevelopment Windward Human Capital Management LLC
