About us

Columbus Museum of Art’s mission is to create great experiences with great art for everyone. Whether we are presenting an exhibition, designing an art-making activity, or giving visitors directions, we are guided by a vision to connect people and art. CMA nurtures that connection and removes barriers between our community and our collection. CMA’s galleries are filled with works that manifest creativity. Our collection includes outstanding late nineteenth and early twentieth-century American and European modern works of art. We house the world’s largest collections of works by beloved local artists Aminah Brenda Lynn Robinson, Elijah Pierce, and George Bellows; and acclaimed collections such as The Photo League and the Philip and Suzanne Schiller Collection of American Social Commentary Art. A commitment to contemporary art, folk art, glass, and photography continues the Museum’s dedication to showcasing art of our time. CMA is where creativity and the daily life of our community intersect and thrive, as we champion new and different ways of thinking and doing. We celebrate the creative process and provide opportunities for people to cultivate and discover the value of creativity in their own lives.

As part of the ArtsVote Ohio effort, the Greater Columbus Arts Council (GCAC), in partnership with CreativeOhio and ArtWorks Cincinnati, organized a nonpartisan “Get Out the Vote” mural project with renowned street artist Shepard Fairey who installed a total of 20 murals throughout downtown, the Columbus College of Art & Design campus, and the Short North Arts District. Pictured are a selection of these murals installed on our neighbor, Columbus College of Art & Design - CCAD’s campus. The Mark Lomax Trio will perform selections of original work focused on themes of unity, peace, and from the eighth album in the "400: An Afrikan Epic" cycle, "Blues In August," a tribute to August Wilson and his "Century Cycle" plays which depicts the lives of non-immigrant Afrikans in America over the course of the 20th century. We are excited to announce two new additions to CMA's advancement team! This month, Sarah Atwood will be joining CMA as Deputy Director for Advancement and Diana Wakim as Senior Director of Individual Giving. Sarah Atwood joins CMA from the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston, where she most recently served as Director of Development. The appointment to Deputy Director for Advancement at CMA marks a new chapter in Ohio for Atwood, who has over a decade of experience in non-profit development with distinguished national and Texas institutions, including The Chinati Foundation in Marfa, The Nature Conservancy, and the Houston Zoo. Diana Wakim, CFRE is deeply familiar with the giving and non-profit landscape of Columbus, and her experience in cultivating, retaining, and growing support will be instrumental in her new position as Senior Director of Individual Giving. Wakim has spent the past ten years working for mission-driven organizations, including United Schools, where she worked across various capacities from Development Associate to Chief Advancement Officer most recently. Brooke Minto Executive Director of CMA says, "We are thrilled to welcome Sarah and Diana to the Columbus Museum of Art. Both Sarah and Diana share CMA’s community-centered mission, and together, our collective efforts will propel the museum into its next great chapter. I look forward to working with them both.” Welcome, Sarah and Diana!

Have you seen "Current" light up the night yet? As the days get shorter, this stunning sculpture by Janet Echelman is here to brighten your evenings! Suspended above Gay and High Streets, "Current" stretches 229 feet—Columbus’ longest public art piece. Made with 78 miles of twine and over 500,000 knots, it’s 15 times stronger than steel and weighs in at 700 pounds! The design and installation of "Current" was funded by the Edwards Family. The Edwards Family also supports annual maintenance, de-installation and reinstallation, ensuring "Current" will continue to inspire wonder far into the future. Take a moment to listen to Columbus-born, National Book Award-winning author and MacArthur Fellow Jacqueline Woodson as she reads her poem "Aunt Ruth," featured in "Ming Smith: Transcendence." This exhibition is presented alongside Woodson’s work, known for its deep exploration of race and gender. We are thrilled to feature her writing, which gives voice to Smith’s subjects and brings the memories within her images to life through powerful storytelling. Aunt Ruth Long before Listen to Black women & Rest As Revolution & Me time were phrases That rolled off our tongues as easily as breath, there was a time when we couldn't yet breathe. Ask Aunt Ruth who took to her bed in the middle of the day and was whispered about. They didn't call it depression but Said she was sad. They didn't call it mental illness but Said she was off. They didn't call it what they should have called it what we'd call it/her now: Warrior Ahead of her time Revolutionary.
