Our region burns much of its garbage at waste-to-energy incinerators, while the remainder is sent to landfills. The three top receivers of this landfill material are Brookhaven (NY), Pennsylvania, and Ohio. With the closure of Brookhaven expected in 2027/2028, critical concerns surrounding cost, traffic, rail, and community opposition are coming to the forefront. Additionally, new issues like Auto Shredder Residue and PFAS chemical pollution are raising alarm. Townships that rely on refuse operations for revenue streams also face potential financial impacts as they plan for the future.
