Meet Andrew Velez, a Staff Water Engineer in our Boca Raton, FL office! Since graduating the H2M Mentorship Program in the spring of 2023, he has proven himself as a standout young professional whose dedication to growth is actively shaping his career. “This was an opportunity to not only learn from a senior-level employee with a wealth of knowledge and experience under his belt, but also a chance to build a relationship with someone that I can always look to for guidance well beyond the program’s graduation,” Andrew explained. Andrew admires his mentor, Office Director Chuck Martello's skillset in successfully running H2M’s Parsippany office. “This was a strategic pairing for me. I knew that Chuck served an important role in the success of an H2M satellite office. As an engineer in an alternate satellite office who was eager to do the same, this was the perfect opportunity for me to both acquire and apply his same skillset to the office I work in.” He continued, “Along the way, I have also significantly developed my relationship-building and networking abilities. Now, I don't shy away from opportunities when they are presented to me. Instead, I welcome them and look for small improvements every single day.” Andrew made the most of his mentorship experience by being proactive and setting clear goals for himself. His ongoing passion to excel is placing him on a path to success as he helps generate a strong workplace culture with a focus on continuous improvement.

Last week, H2M partnered with NYS Assemblyman Keith Brown to host state and local government officials in our Discovery Room for an educational “Lunch & Learn” seminar on Municipal Separate Storm Sewer Systems (MS4s).   MS4s are publicly owned systems that collect or re-route stormwater overflow. In order to reduce the runoff of contaminated stormwater into our surface waters, New York State requires certain municipalities to obtain stormwater discharge permits and perform rigorous monitoring of stormwater runoff.   Lunch & Learn speakers from H2M included Project Environmental Planner Angie Apolinaris and Senior Associate and Senior Civil Discipline Engineer Sean Callahan, PE, LEED AP, who provided information about new NYS monitoring requirements and best practices for mitigating stormwater runoff.   Thank you to all of the hardworking public officials who attended our Lunch & Learn seminar! With proper education and collaboration, we can all work together to protect our beautiful local waters from polluted stormwater runoff.

Our Women’s Leadership ERG has organized a book club for employees to discuss novels relating to the empowerment of women. The employee resource groups at H2M are dedicated to creating an inclusive and enjoyable environment for employees to connect through not only work but passions like reading. Later this week our NYC office will be joining the fun and hosting their club where the group’s next book will be selected!

This week, H2M's Employee Resource Groups and Learning + Development Team launched our first Speak Squad event. This event aims to provide our employees with an opportunity to develop their public speaking skills in a comfortable and inclusive environment. H2M employees will learn more about how to overcome speaking anxiety, best practices, and actions to avoid when public speaking.
