The Commonwealth Center for Advanced Manufacturing (CCAM) is an applied research center that bridges the gap between fundamental research typically performed at universities and product development routinely performed by companies. CCAM accelerates the transition of research innovation from the laboratory to commercial use. CCAM is the only collaboration of its kind in North America and it promises its member companies significant business benefits. By pooling resources to pursue university research authorized by member companies, CCAM increases the value of the R&D dollar. R&D risks and costs are shared by members – away from live production floors – and research results are shared with all members, allowing each company to capitalize on new, breakthrough developments that emerge from CCAM research. CCAM Unveils Industry-Leading GO TEC® Training Lab to Foster Next-Gen STEM Talent The newly unveiled GO TEC® Training Lab at the Commonwealth Center for Advanced Manufacturing (CCAM) aims to support the training and technical support objectives of the Great Opportunities in Technology and Engineering Careers (GO TEC®) program. The facility is strategically positioned to provide specialized training in key focus areas: precision machining; welding; IT/cybersecurity; robotics, automation, and mechatronics; advanced materials; and biotech engineering. GO TEC was launched in 2018 by the Institute for Advanced Learning and Research (IALR) in Danville, VA. There are now over forty GO TEC Career Connections labs operating in Virginia middle schools. The lab at CCAM is already training local middle school teachers from six Central Virginia school divisions, many of which represent underserved communities, including Colonial Heights, Dinwiddie, Greensville, Hopewell, Petersburg, and Surry. The expectation is that GO TEC will soon expand to support many more school divisions in Central VA. As an U.S. Economic Development Administration Designated #TechHub, we have the opportunity to request implementation funding in the range of $50-75M. Today we are in the thick of submitting our application for our seven interconnected component projects totaling approximately $70 million in federal implementation funding to sustain -- and surpass -- our Region’s acceleration to becoming the global technology hub in APM. Since October, our consortium has grown from 29 members to 44. More than half of our consortium partners are either project leads or subawardees, further reinforcing our interconnective glue as an APM Coalition.
