I enjoyed spending time at his crib with my Frat. Bros. (06!), including Hill Harper (of the good Doctor fame), who is running for Senate (MI). He is very committed to advancing and supporting our efforts to make healthcare more equitable and accessible for all racial and culturally diverse communities in Michigan and beyond. With his help, we will make great progress toward achieving our goal.

Concordant Healthcare Solutions, Inc. recently launched an impactful workshop as part of the National Mental Health Month activities, focusing on the critical topic of racism-related stress and its profound effects on the mental and physical health of people and communities of color. This timely workshop was designed by professionals of color to educate participants about the multifaceted ways in which racial stressors undermine health, contributing to disparities in mental and physical well-being, and the steps human-centered leaders can take to reduce racism-related stress. This workshop also provides a comprehensive overview of the psychological mechanisms through which racial stress affects individuals, including the development of chronic stress conditions and mental health disorders like anxiety and depression. Additionally, the workshop explores the somatic consequences of prolonged exposure to racism, such as hypertension and cardiovascular disease, which disproportionately affect communities of color. Key components of the workshop included evidence-based strategies for identifying, managing, and mitigating the impacts of racial stress. Facilitators employed interactive sessions, expert panels, and community-led discussions to foster a supportive environment where participants could learn and share. The launch of this workshop underscores Concordant Healthcare Solutions, Inc.'s commitment to addressing critical health issues at the intersection of race and wellness, promoting a better understanding within healthcare professions, and equipping individuals and communities with tools to combat the pervasive effects of racism on health. • We include compelling historical events and analyses throughout our Human-centered leadership courses to help our learners align those events with contemporary events that affect the healthcare experience of people and communities of color. Here is an example of an event we include: The case of Simkins v. Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital is a landmark legal battle that significantly advanced the cause of civil rights in the realm of healthcare. Challenging and ultimately changing the discriminatory practices of hospitals that received federal funding helped pave the way for the desegregation of healthcare facilities in the United States. The formal apology issued by Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital to the Simkins plaintiffs underscores the ongoing process of reconciliation and the importance of acknowledging and addressing past injustices to move forward. I was honored to be selected to speak at the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation meeting in Tunica, Mississippi. It was during the time the Affordable Care Act (Obama Care) was being hotly debated in Congress, with strong arguments and discourse on both sides of the aisle. I was on the panel with the CEO of AARP and the president of the National Medical Association, but little did I know that I was going to follow Congressman John Lewis (GA).  That brother gave a flat-out sermon on how it was important for the members of Congress to fight for healthcare as a right and not a benefit for the privileged.  He had the room buzzing, with even the press cheering him on.  As I got up to speak, my head was spinning, and I had a serious case of dry mouth.  I knew that I was about to change the atmosphere in the room.  I took a deep breath, looked out at the audience, and said to myself, “Let’s roll.” I began by asking the audience if anyone had a mistrust of healthcare providers and systems.  Many raised their hand.  I asked how many felt that they were treated disrespectfully or in a condescending manner by healthcare providers and systems.  More of the same.  Then, I asked how many times they felt that the reason they were being treated differently was because of their race.  Now, the spirit is back in the room. Heads nodded and the attention span returned. I went on to explain how healthcare disparities among people and communities of color caused avoidable illness, death, cost, and socioeconomic harm.  I also discussed how low health literacy and the lack of culturally competent care contributed to poor quality and poor patient experience for people and communities of color. I  went on to urge the members of Congress to add provisions in the ACA to improve health equity, healthcare literacy, and culturally competent care, And how they were important to improve the health and wellness of people and communities of color (and they did). I was pleasantly surprised to get a standing ovation from the audience and a big hug from John Lewis when I finished, and I also received a nice letter from Congressman Bennie Thompson. The pandemic has opened our eyes to how healthcare disparities among people and communities of color cause significant and avoidable harm. Now is the time to take meaningful and sustainable steps to transform our healthcare system to make it truly equitable and value-based for all communities served.   “Let’s roll.” Read the letter from Congressman Thompson Here: https://lnkd.in/e_HeR8hA

  • Human-Centered Leadership in Healthcare Human-centered leadership is a style that prioritizes empathy, compassion, and the well-being of staff and patients. It emphasizes understanding the needs, motivations, and perspectives of individuals within the organization. Such leadership tends to foster a more engaged and satisfied workforce because when leaders are attentive to the needs and well-being of their staff, it can lead to reduced burnout, increased job satisfaction, and lower turnover rates. This, in turn, can positively affect productivity and efficiency. Patient Experience Benefit Patient experience scores are a critical metric in healthcare, reflecting the patients' perceptions of the quality of care and service they receive. These scores are often used as indicators of overall healthcare quality and can impact healthcare organizations' reputation and financial health.  Human-centered leadership can significantly enhance the patient experience because studies show that leaders who are empathetic and responsive to the needs of patients and staff can create an environment where high-quality, compassionate care is the norm. This, in turn, can lead to higher patient satisfaction and better patient experience scores. Financial Benefit Value-based revenue in healthcare is an emerging payment model that rewards organizations for the quality of care provided rather than the quantity of services rendered. Human-centered leadership can directly influence value-based revenue. By focusing on the needs and well-being of both staff and patients, such leadership can improve the quality of care, leading to better patient outcomes. This aligns with value-based healthcare principles, where improved outcomes are financially rewarded4. In essence, human-centered leadership has a multi-faceted impact on healthcare organizations. It enhances staff engagement and satisfaction, improving patient care and experience. This improvement aligns with the principles of value-based revenue, potentially leading to better financial performance for the organization.
