In 1966, he made a groundbreaking discovery—ultra-pure glass fibers could transmit data over long distances with minimal loss. This paved the way for the fiber-optic infrastructure that powers the internet, streaming, cloud computing, and global communication today. His vision earned him the 2009 Nobel Prize in Physics, but more importantly, it shaped the modern world. Without Kao’s research, we might still be relying on slow, unreliable connections instead of the high-speed connectivity we take for granted. The design required relocating existing facilities, trenching, and placing infrastructure alongside the proposed Las Vegas Grand Prix track.
