The Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP) and the Broadband Equity Access and Deployment (BEAD) initiative were designed to work hand in hand 🤝 While BEAD funds network infrastructure to expand internet access, ACP would ensure low-income Americans could afford to use it. Now, with ACP funding gone, broadband just got less affordable for millions of Americans. ❓ What does this loss mean for those who depended on ACP? How will it impact the economics of BEAD-funded networks? And how are states adapting to prevent this gap from derailing efforts to deliver high-speed, affordable internet? Over the past two years, many of us have used Microsoft's Digital Equity Data Dashboard to get a clearer picture of connectivity across the United States. It’s exciting to see the tool refreshed with new data—showing the strides we’ve made and the work still ahead to close the digital divides that remain. Onwards!
Access to broadband is a fundamental right that empowers individuals and communities, and data can help us better understand trends to close the digital divide. Since its initial launch in 2022, the @Microsoft Digital Equity Data Dashboard has become a tool for addressing disparities in broadband access and economic opportunities across the U.S., especially for underserved communities. Today, we are sharing a refreshed dashboard, built by our AI for Good team, with new data from the Federal Communications Commission, U.S. Census Bureau, Code.org, and BroadbandNow. This update gives policymakers the local insights they need to better understand these issues to help bring the internet to more people. The great news is the latest findings show that every state has seen an increase in broadband access. Our Airband partners have helped extend coverage to more than 7.4 million people, using innovative technologies to bring connectivity deeper into rural areas. For low-income households earning less than $20,000, we saw an increase of over 10.8 percent in connectivity, translating to 325,000 more connected households in this income group. By combining effective technologies with strategic partnerships, we aim to expand connectivity to 250 million people worldwide by the end of next year. As we’ve seen with our work in the U.S., we need more robust public-private partnerships and targeted government investments to drive meaningful change, so no one is left behind. Let’s work together to create a more equitable future for all and ensure everyone has the chance to succeed in our digital world. Read the full update in my latest blog: https://aka.ms/AAstkln

Love to see Buckeye Hills Regional Council recognized for their work through the Appalachia Digital Accelerator! Their efforts in Washington & Meigs Counties, Ohio, are helping bring high-speed, affordable internet to local residents and businesses. Cheers to making broadband dreams a reality! 🎉👏
We are honored to receive a 2024 Impact Award from the National Association of Development Organizations (NADO) for the Appalachian Digital Accelerator. With support from the Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC), we’ve worked with Connect Humanity to help Washington and Meigs counties develop connectivity plans to improve access to high-speed internet. Fast, reliable broadband supports quality health care, education, tourism, business growth, and so much more. We were also pleased to stand alongside our partners at the Voinovich School of Leadership and Public Service at Ohio University and Ohio Mid-Eastern Governments Association for the impact award earned by the collaborative RISE Ohio project, which has helped the region forge a path toward economic diversification and transition in light of the decline in the coal economy.

In the summer of 2023, we teamed up with Quinn Jordan, Gigi Sohn, Elizabeth Bowles, Philip Macres and many others to sound the alarm about BEAD's Letter of Credit requirement which we feared would block small, community-centric, and municipal providers from America's biggest ever broadband investment program. Thanks to collective efforts, the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) heard our concerns and offered alternatives to the requirement. One of these alternatives is surety bonds. In this piece for Breakfast Media LLC, Quinn explains that the next crucial step lies with the states, which must include language in their BEAD contracts to enable surety bonds as alternative guarantees. Heading to Pikeville for SOAR Summit 2024? Don't miss our panel TOMORROW on community-led broadband planning! Samantha Schartman will sit down with participants from the Appalachia Digital Accelerator, who will share their insights from their broadband planning journey and discuss why connectivity is crucial to their efforts to rebuild following devastating floods that hit Eastern Kentucky in 2022. 🎤 Panelists include: Dr. Jeff Hawkins & Harry Collins (Fleming-Neon) Jamie Collett & Kari Collins (Red Bird Mission). Recently, reflecting on Neon's flooding, Dr. Hawkins shared: "A friend once told me there are three kinds of people during a flood. People who float and wait for help. People who give up. And people who swim to shore. When our flood happened, and people came from all over to help clean up, we added a fourth category: people who build lifeboats." These speakers are the lifeboat builders. Come hear their powerful stories. #SOARSummit2024 #EasternKY #CommunityGrowth Shaping Our Appalachian Region, Inc. (SOAR)
