Increasing the effectiveness of global conservation efforts to save threatened species

About us

CPSG is a Specialist Group of the International Union for Conservation of Nature Species Survival Commission (IUCN SSC) supported by a non-profit organization, the Global Conservation Network. CPSG’s mission is to save threatened species by increasing the effectiveness of conservation efforts worldwide. For over 40 years, we’ve accomplished this by using scientifically sound, collaborative processes that bring together people with diverse perspectives and knowledge to catalyse positive conservation change. We provide species conservation planning expertise to governments, Specialist Groups, zoos and aquariums, and other wildlife organizations. We support an integrated approach to species conservation planning through the joint development of management strategies and conservation actions by all responsible parties, known as the One Plan Approach. We strive to ensure that a broad range of stakeholders is represented at each workshop. As a result, one comprehensive conservation plan for the species helps bridge the gap between wild and captive population management. CPSG offers tools and processes that address commonly encountered conservation planning needs, and help to get species in need on the road to recovery. Visit out website to see what workshops, training and webinars we offer!

  • 🌿 Furbish’s Lousewort (Pedicularis furbishiae) is a rare plant species only found along the banks of the Wolastoq River in New Brunswick and Maine. Named after botanist Kate Furbish, this unique species was the first plant to be designated as endangered in Canada in 1980. 🔴 Sadly, population numbers have continued to decline and due to increasingly frequent and severe winter storms along the river, the New Brunswick population is threatened with extirpation.  ✨ Fortunately, a dedicated team of conservation partners has been working to safeguard the future of Furbish’s Lousewort. 🇨🇦 In July, CPSG Canada designed and facilitated an Ex Situ Conservation Planning workshop held in Fredericton, NB and funded by Environment and Climate Change Canada via Priority Place funding. 👥 Workshop participants, including government representatives, research scientists, NGOs, landholders, and Indigenous knowledge holders, evaluated alternative conservation strategies that combine in situ and ex situ methods and developed recommendations to support recovery of Furbish’s Lousewort in the wild. 🍃 Thank you to all the participants and the incredible organizing team from the New Brunswick Department of Natural Resources and Energy Development, The Canadian Forestry Service – Atlantic Forestry Centre, The Nature Trust of New Brunswick, and The University of New Brunswick who made this workshop possible! #Conservation #EndangeredSpecies #PlantConservation #RarePlants #CanadianSpecies #ClimateChange #ConservationTranslocation

  • 🌿 Last month, CPSG headed to Jamaica to facilitate a conservation workshop dedicated to saving 53 of the island’s unique and endemic orchids and melastomes (flowering shrubs) 🌸🌺 This workshop was developed in collaboration with @nepajamaica, @uwimona, and @iucn_congress, and generously supported by @cepf_official Critical Ecosystem Partnership Fund, @Worldbank and @canari_caribbean 👥 31 passionate participants from 16 institutions, including representatives from relevant government departments, academia and civil society organizations, gathered at UWI Mona in Kingston from July 22-26, 2024. Together, we tackled the critical challenges these species face and brainstormed impactful actions—from ex situ propagation in botanical gardens to engaging local communities in conservation efforts. 🪴💚 #ConservationInAction #Biodiversity #EndangeredSpecies #Orchids

  • 🗣️ The goal of NACCB is to provide a forum for sharing new research, developments, and strategies that will inform policy changes and conservation practices to address today’s conservation challenges. In this sense, CPSG Canada and HQ organized a symposium on the One Plan Approach (OPA) to species conservation. 🟢The OPA is the development of management strategies and conservation actions by all responsible parties for all populations of a species, whether inside (in situ) or outside (ex situ) their natural range. 🤝By creating an inclusive community of diverse collaborators focused on a shared conservation vision and evaluating all possible management options, the OPA ensures that the most effective conservation actions are identified and implemented for threatened species. 🦬CPSG presented and discussed: - Case studies of planning processes for threatened North American species that benefited from a OPA, such as the American red wolf and poweshiek skipperling. - Options for using CPSG tools like Population Viability Analysis and Ex Situ Conservation Assessment for integrated and inclusive recovery planning in North America. - Opportunities for CPSG training and support for building OPA planning capacity within the conservation community. 🌐The OPA is now the global standard for species conservation, ratified by a resolution at the 2020 IUCN World Conservation Congress to link in situ and ex situ efforts to save threatened species. #NACCB2024 #Conservation @Wildlife Preservation Canada @African Lion Safari

  • 💧 Dragonflies are some of the most beautiful and recognisable aquatic invertebrates, and are potent indicators of aquatic ecosystem health! 🔴 In February and March this year, CPSG worked with dragonfly specialists from across Europe to build a plan of action for European dragonflies, focusing on those recently categorised as threatened by the IUCN's Red List assessment process. 🗣️ The results of this work will be presented this week by Geert De Knijf, at the 7th European Congress on Odonatology in Sevilla, Spain. This meeting will also see the launch of a new Dragonfly Conservation Europe network which will take the lead on many of the priority actions identified. We hope this will be a turning point for threatened dragonflies across Europe! 📄 CPSG staff worked closely with CPSG Europe and IUCN Brussels to facilitate this project. The action plan is in the final stages of production and the IUCN Red List report, data from which underpins the plan, will be available from June 28th. 👩💻For further details of the conference visit the European Congress on Odonatology website at https://lnkd.in/dGjHdrvR #dragonfly #dragonflies #europe #conservation #endangered #reversethered

  • 🔴 CPSG's facilitation of threat assessment and subsequent three-day action planning workshop for West African vultures, back in 2022, resulted in a conservation action plan to put them on the road to recovery. 🦅 The West African Vulture Conservation Action Plan (WAVCAP) has been published. This plan covers 6 species over 16 countries and is a vital step in the conservation of these incredible birds! 📄 Read more about the plan and what is putting these species at risk in this great Mongabay article: https://lnkd.in/dHByxPK4

🎊 Along with many Europeans, CPSG Europe is celebrating a huge milestone for the continent's biodiversity!!!   ⚖️ After nail-biting suspense… the EU's Environment ministers today voted to formally adopted the EU Nature Restoration Law, that aims to put measures in place to restore at least 20% of the EU’s land and sea areas by 2030, and all ecosystems in need of restoration by 2050.    🌲 It sets specific, legally binding targets and obligations for nature restoration in terrestrial marine, freshwater and urban ecosystems.    🐝 We are excited to play our part in providing effective planning to restore Europe's species and their genetic diversity! #europe #restauration #law #terrestrial #freshwater #marine #endangeredspecies #conservation
