Reinventing conservation to prevent the Sixth Mass Extinction.

About us

Conservation X Labs is creating a new model for conservation, built on the exponential technologies & connectivity, coupled with financial and behavior change innovations, and scaled through the private sector, partnerships with conservation organizations, and collaborations with governments and intergovernmental entities. By harnessing the democratization of science and technology, we can finally allow conservation to operate at the pace and on the scale necessary to keep up with and even get head of the planet’s most intractable environmental challenges. There is a clear need to accelerate conservation solutions, harness new technologies, and draw upon new solvers and new solutions through new approaches. Importantly, we also know we can work through the private sector to improve the efficacy, impact, sustainability, and scale of conservation efforts while building sustainable income for communities that rely on those resources. Finally, humans are at the center of conservation problems. Any approach to conservation needs to change the incentive structures, both in biodiversity-rich countries, and in those countries that generate the demand for products and goods that put pressure on those systems. We can apply what we know from behavior and psychology, marketing, and social media to shift demand and incentive structures. Much as humans have created the problems, we have the means to solve them.

🔥🌲 Member Spotlight: Liam Torpy 🌲🔥 On this Indigenous People's Day, we're glad to spotlight Liam Torpy, a FireUp member who is working to center Indigenous knowledge and practices in the future of wildfire risk management. He's the Manager of the Fire Grand Challenge at Conservation X Labs, an open innovation competition to accelerate and scale new solutions to destructive fire that bring together Indigenous, rural, and place-based knowledge with technology and other forms of innovation. Through his work, Liam helps communities and land managers across Western North America bring back healthier, more controlled fire practices on a large scale. He says, "After over a century of fire exclusion, climate change, and other forms of environment upheaval, we’re now facing a generational challenge in restoring our forests; I’m motivated by the clear urgency of the issue, by the opportunity to establish a more effective and equitable conservation paradigm, and by all the amazing people working in the field today...FireUp embodies a core element of the Fire Grand Challenge: building a broader, more inclusive and effective community of practice in the fire and forestry space. We’re engaging the platform to connect with innovators across the region, and we’re excited to continue using it in new ways, such as a convening space and educational network, as the Challenge progresses.” At FireUp, we’re proud to support Liam in his mission to build a broader, more inclusive, and effective community of practice in the fire and forestry space. Learn more about the Fire Grand Challenge and how Liam’s work is shaping the future of conservation by visiting https://lnkd.in/eJ-N9ZUp! 👉 Join our community today at https://lnkd.in/gzD98s2D and get connected with innovators like Liam who are making a difference in wildfire resilience! #CXLFireChallenge #FireResilience #WildfireInnovation #Conservation #Forestry #FireUpCommunity

On this Indigenous Peoples Day, we’re proud that the Fire Grand Challenge is pursuing solutions that not only leverage cutting edge science and technology, but also leverage the deep wisdom of traditional, Indigenous knowledge. For centuries, Indigenous peoples across North America practiced intentional burning, known as "cultural burning," to manage the landscape. These controlled burns were used to promote the growth of certain plants, maintain open meadows, reduce underbrush, and prevent large, uncontrollable wildfires. By regularly burning specific areas, Indigenous communities could encourage the growth of food sources like acorns, berries, and grasses, and create habitats for game animals. These practices were based on deep ecological knowledge and an understanding of the land's needs. Cultural burning helped maintain biodiversity and resilience in ecosystems, reducing the risk of catastrophic wildfires by managing fuel loads and promoting healthy, fire-adapted environments. Though the arrival of European settlers and the implementation of fire suppression policies suppressed these traditional practices, they are critical to the work we must do to reduce the large, intense wildfires seen today. We are grateful for the partnership of Indigenous communities as we come alongside to co-create better ways to manage and live with fire. Last week, we had the opportunity to host a webinar featuring Indigenous women leaders in cultural fire management. An intergenerational panel shared their experiences and stories about rematriating the land through sacred fire. We invite you to watch the recording to gain insights into how Indigenous knowledge can shape the future of fire management: https://lnkd.in/eZWxY5CX

Principal Engineer at Conservation X Labs

Developing a field-deployable device meant I had to get out in the field this summer. One of the many perks of my job at Conservation X Labs! Here I’m collecting water samples to verify our Environmental DNA (eDNA) workflow for the NABIT. The NABIT is our handheld species identification tool that can be used by anyone, anywhere to generate lab-quality genetic data at the point of contact. Want to know if a species is lurking underneath your paddleboard? With the NABIT on board, you can find out in under 30 minutes!

What Are Partner Communities? Partner communities play a crucial role in the #CXLFireChallenge by collaborating with technical applicants to integrate local knowledge into innovative solutions, ensuring these solutions are more effective in addressing specific, real-world challenges. Six finalist teams, matched through a formal process, will work closely with partner communities to field-test and accelerate their innovations. This collaboration is key to forming long-term partnerships aimed at reducing the risk of catastrophic fires. We invite Indigenous and rural communities—such as Tribal governments and organizations, nonprofits, and fire departments—to join us in co-developing and implementing field-testing plans, contributing invaluable local expertise and context. Apply to be a partner community:  https://lnkd.in/e8hdPtU3
