  • When pioneers for nature and climate unite, everyone wins. At The Earthshot Prize Awards in Cape Town, we witnessed something truly remarkable. Being an Earthshot Prize Finalist has reinforced our mission at NatureMetrics → to leverage the power of high integrity data to drive action and financing on the ground - and that’s exactly how we will be supporting our fellow Finalists, and our worthy Winners, in their endeavours for nature: → Advanced Thermovoltaic Systems (ATS) offers a simple, safe and reliable solution to transform industrial waste heat into electricity for use in hard to abate industries, with the potential to save gigatonnes of CO2. Their patented solution is also 98% circular, with components that can be reused, and cartridges that can be replaced as needed. → Keep IT Cool | Deliver while still fresh (KIC) provides sustainable refrigeration and smart distribution solutions for small farmers and fishers. It helps extend the shelf life of their produce, reduces spoilage, and creates more stable incomes. By improving profits and cutting down on food waste, KIC is helping build a more sustainable future for these communities. → High Ambition Coalition for Nature and People (HAC) is turning words into action, engaging with governments around the world to officially protect 30% of our land and oceans by 2030. HAC is pushing governments to commit and act to protect 30% of the world’s land and oceans by 2030. Since its inception, HAC has rapidly expanded its mission, signing up 120 countries to the 30×30 target and doubling its signatories since 2021. → Altyn Dala Conservation Initiative has achieved an almost unprecedented feat: saving the critically endangered Saiga Antelope from extinction. This mission has grown into one of the world’s largest conservation projects – to protect and restore Kazakhstan’s Golden Steppe. The Saiga Antelope has recovered from “critically endangered” to “near threatened” status on the IUCN Red List. From a population of just 20,000 in 2003, the steppe is now home to 2.86 million Saiga. → Green Africa Youth Organization (GAYO) drives behavioural change to help communities clean up waste, create jobs and build infrastructure to support circular waste management across Africa. Since 2019, they have created 70 green jobs for young people, widows, single mothers, and people with disabilities. As a result, more than 5,000 people have benefited directly or indirectly from the model. Being part of this inspirational network will help us to advance our technology, expand our network, and connect with conservationists on the ground, supporting their vital work out in the field. From here, we will continue to push forward together, tackling the task at hand with our shared knowledge. • Congratulations Just Climate on securing $175 million in backing for their Natural Climate Solutions strategy. As the first company to receive investment from this strategy, we appreciate the urgent need for funding to help transform land use to achieve global net-zero and nature positive goals - and that robust measurement must sit at the heart of this.   Our CEO, Dimple Patel echoed this sentiment, commenting: "recent geopolitical events remind us just how much we rely on visionary organisations prepared to make bold investments in change for good. Just Climate not only understand the urgent need to invest now to drive systems change but also has the reach and ability to convene the diverse stakeholders required to turn ambition into action. We are honoured to have their support — a true partnership rooted in shared goals and values."

  • 🌍 Understanding habitat change is crucial for sustainability reporting, land management, and biodiversity monitoring → Land Cover mapping is one of the three key metrics for assessing habitat health. Our new Habitat Insights offering provides detailed biodiversity intelligence across these essential metrics: → Land Cover, → Habitat Connectivity, → and Vegetation Health, and more! Here, we’ll dive into Land Cover mapping—what it is and why it matters. 👀 → What is Land Cover Mapping? Land Cover mapping uses a modelled approach derived from satellite imagery to provide insights into the physical landscape, identifying major habitats and their respective areas at each site. This information is vital for: - Land Managers (including farmers) - Conservationists - Sustainability Teams → Why Measure Land Cover? 1️⃣ Habitat Identification - Highlights various habitat types (e.g. forests, grasslands, wetlands), aiding in the identification of biodiversity hotspots and potential species ranges. 2️⃣ Monitoring Changes - Tracks land cover changes to detect trends in ecosystem health—like increased tree cover indicating successful regeneration. 3️⃣ Informed Conservation Strategies - Prioritise actions by identifying habitat connections and areas needing restoration to enhance ecosystem resilience. 4️⃣ Regulatory Support - Aligns with frameworks like CSRD, TNFD, and GRI, facilitating compliance efforts and demonstrating a commitment to sustainability. Land Cover mapping is essential for informed decision-making and effective biodiversity management. By integrating this data into conservation practices, organisations can track ecological changes and meet regulatory requirements. 🔗 Learn more about the insights offered by Habitat Insights here → https://lnkd.in/gktsG2hH (P.S Be sure to check back for future posts on the ins and outs of Habitat Connectivity and Vegetation Health!)

How do we make biodiversity measurable at scale? This is one of the questions Dimple Patel, tackled in the recent Nature Tech Alliance webinar. → From small samples of water, soil and air, we can detect the entire tree of life, generating ground-truthed biodiversity intelligence. Combine that with geospatial and AI technology and we can deliver large-scale datasets, which organisations can rely on for key decision making, fundraising, financing, reporting and more. Catch up on the webinar to hear more from those leading the nature tech revolution. You’ll learn how companies are leveraging AI-powered insights and new data to navigate nature risks. Thank you ERM for hosting the webinar, and to fellow speakers from Planet, Salesforce, Anglo American, Anew Climate and Barclays. 📺 https://lnkd.in/daJ7uafU

  • 🦊 🦆 Incredible to see so many species in just one location! Joe Huddart, PhD 🐟 it's brilliant to see this kind of accessible citizen science in action - a fantastic way to understand more about the diversity of the biodiversity around us, to inspire the next generation and to contribute to nationwide datasets. We're looking forward to that pioneering beaver making an appearance! 🤞

💧 Aquatic ecologist and eDNA Town Crier at NatureMetrics - if not now, when?

🐾 An aquatic badger. A little egret fishing. At least two foxes doing… well, what foxes do… 💩the species list goes on! The best £60 I've spent in years? Easily this wildlife camera. In two weeks it's captured incredible footage, day and night, along a small stream near my home. 🔨 🧬 Working at NatureMetrics, I'm usually advocating for #eDNA and its power to reveal biodiversity — especially aquatic species presence, but I wanted to experiment with some more accessible MRV (Monitoring, Reporting, and Verification) tools. I'm no camera trap expert, but I love how easy it is to use. With Bluetooth connectivity, I walk up, connect via my phone, and instantly download the footage — no hassle, no SD card juggling. Battery lasts weeks. Zero faff. 😎 With the data, you can: ✅ Track biodiversity uplift ✅ Prove species presence, condition, abundance ✅ Understand habitat use ✅ Monitor species activity/ behaviour ✅ Contribute to global biodiversity datasets But! what really strikes me is the storytelling of these cameras. For such a low-cost tool, the potential to engage with real, visual imagery is huge. Look how beautiful that jay is- I launched headfirst into a jay wormhole learning more about this bird. Also the accessibility; anyone can deploy these cameras repeatedly and add to datasets like #gbif and iNaturalist as citizen scientists- pretty sweet. 🦫 No doubt I'll snap those pioneering Surrey beavers as they arrive Jake Chant, Ben Goldsmith, Sarah Brockless, Ben Morris, Will Kelsey! 🤖 Now I want to explore some AI tools to automatically identify the species, has anyone tried this before or used AI for wildlife camera footage? Would love to hear your experiences. I'll DM the link to this camera if you are interested as there are tonnes out there to choose from. #Biodiversity #Conservation #WildlifeMonitoring #CameraTrap #MRV #eDNA #Nature #SpeciesMonitoring #TechForNature #StakeholderEngagement #Ecology
