Stoked to finally get to announce this project. There is a lot more potential for this solution in the years ahead, particularly as we look to power our upcoming glass factory. Thanks to the people behind the scenes who helped execute this pilot project and continue to learn from it for future bigger projects: Todd Phillips Paul McDonald Robert Vinje and to our filming crew and creative team Forrest Arakawa Brooke Havlik Rachel Cifarelli. And thanks to all our customers who believe in this vision to truly close the loop on the solar circular economy. Let's do this!!
We are thrilled to share that we have built a first-of-its-kind solar power plant from reused solar panels and it is actively providing energy to our recycling facility in Odessa, Texas! ☀ The panels are reused from various residential and utility-scale systems nationwide, including our customers Ørsted and Sunrun. In 5-10 years, once their power production shrinks, we will transfer the panels right into our nearby recycling lines and replace the panels with future feedstock. Our Todd Phillips explains how the new system works in our latest blog: https://lnkd.in/g5pCYSnm And you can read more in Solar Power World via Kelly Pickerel 👉 https://lnkd.in/g67_k6-s

So the first time I spoke about #DERs as a critical reliability driver to solve for in #Texas #energypolicy, it was Jan. 2021, a month before #Uri: let's just say things were slow-moving. But after the storm, #battery DER sales took off. This was before the #IRA standalone #storage #ITC and before market design for #VPP/ #ADER took shape as a way to compensate customers. Consumers move faster than policy. Now in the difficult chaos of weather-induced #distribution system outages in 2024, I am reminded of what makes a transformative moment in energy policy. It is electricity customers who, suddenly exposed to the terrible risks of these events, catalyze change with the most powerful action they can take- investing in their personal #energyindependence and #resiliency, and demanding that service providers and policymakers support their choices. So earlier today, I filed a list of topics in the #ADER Project 53911 at the Public Utility Commission of Texas, describing what several market participants and residential customers, and their #DER installers, have personally described and walked me through: solvable barriers to expanding access to home battery systems that could be in an ERCOT #ADER. I've also heard from electricity providers who want to deliver mixed-device, basic #demandresponse that can be compensated in the market. All of that makes sense too: if sophisticated commercial facilities can get paid to curtail from a market signal, residents should be able to receive a similar compensation structure through their retailer for reducing their consumption at the premise. These suggestions and topics are included in the filing: https://lnkd.in/ew2VPnb9 This filing requests that the #ADERtaskforce consider hosting public workshops to discuss these barriers. It also invites the public to opine on these topics: anyone can submit a comment in Project 53911 at any time to bring forth new info or perspectives about #ADERs. Access the interchange filer to submit a comment, and review the docket here: https://lnkd.in/eTnNEFJs I will have the chance to dig into this deeply technical and complex problem set with the public, at several events over the next few months, including the DER Task Force #DERVos2024, Conservative Energy Network, SPEER , and #txlege PowerHouse Texas. (And probably a couple more pods along the way). A big thanks to the #TexasEnergy community for engagement on this critical topic and to colleagues at U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), state agencies, think tanks, NARUC #narucsummer2024, EPRI, Electric Power Engineers and utilities for helping me think through the integrated web of topics we are solving for. ⚡

"Come on in. The water is fine." Storage capacity in the U.S. has grown enough in recent years to be able to power many millions of homes, according to S&P Global Market Intelligence. California and Texas dominate the industry, but projects are in the works in Nevada, Arizona and elsewhere to help meet growing power demand from artificial-intelligence data centers and manufacturing plants.
