Can you see the light? This is a portion of our light room (really a dark room) with one of our ranges where we test light meters. It is always interesting working in this area. I know when I am giving a tour and show visitors this room, I call it our "teenage goth" room.

Quite the magnetic personality: This is our Helmholtz coil we use in the lab for testing some low range gauss meters. We have found that most people don't really need their gauss meters calibrated because they are not as interested in the actual magnetic quantitative values. They generally only use gauss meters to show the presence of a magnetic field. But it does look pretty cool. I always tell students I am giving tours to that they should see the hamsters we have running around the labs!

Going with the Flow. We tend to calibrate a wide variety of liquid flow test equipment. Our liquid flow loop is fairly versatile to allow us to test devices in many different pipe sizes and material based on the client's need. I always explain to people who tour the lab that our "Partridge Family bus" patchwork is intentional to help meet the requests from clients. Besides, it looks more like a work of art with all the different types of pipe.
Still working in retirement: Here is a picture of our 100,000 pound force machine we originally purchased for our lab around 1915. It served us well in the lab for about 100 years (it even moved twice). With a bit of conversion, it is enjoying its retirement as a great looking table in our lunch room, which is now named the 100K Cafe' in its honor. If you zoom in and look closely, you can see a copy of the original ad way back from when we purchased it. It continues to be a good conversation piece and the adjustable mass still moves. The real trick was getting it in the lunchroom. Ask me about that story some day when you see me.
