  • CBA’s weekly spotlight series highlights valued partners from our member banks who help continue our advocacy work every day. This week’s spotlight is Rachel Stephens from PNC! 𝟭. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁’𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘁𝗶𝘁𝗹𝗲, 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂’𝗿𝗲 𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗯𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗷𝗼𝗯? I’m Rachel Stephens, Vice President, Senior Communications Lead, Issues Management and Corporate Reputation at PNC. I’m based in Washington, D.C., and joined the team in April 2024. 𝟮. 𝗧𝗼 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗱𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗼𝘄𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘀𝘂𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗼𝗱𝗮𝘆? A family friend and mentor encouraged me to move to D.C. and work on Capitol Hill after graduating college. This invaluable experience taught me skills that will be helpful throughout my career, such as working efficiently under pressure in high-profile situations and coordinating across teams to deliver timely solutions when public-facing issues arise. 𝟯. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁’𝘀 𝗮 𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝗯𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗼𝗿 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗱𝗼𝗻’𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸 𝗲𝗻𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗽𝗮𝘆𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘄𝗵𝘆? Communicators should pay attention to the growing prevalence of AI-generated "news" sites that have no human POCs. Inaccuracies published by these outlets are more difficult to correct than those with a traditional newsroom staff, presenting a greater risk for the spread of false information. 𝟰. 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗱𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘂𝗻𝘄𝗶𝗻𝗱 𝗮𝗳𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗮 𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝗱𝗮𝘆 𝗮𝘁 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸 𝗼𝗿 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗲𝗲𝗸𝗲𝗻𝗱𝘀? I enjoy getting in a Peloton ride then going on a walk to grab an iced coffee or tea around my neighborhood. 𝟱. 𝗔 𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗴𝘂𝗲 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗼𝘄𝗻 𝗶𝘀 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗰𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸 – 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁’𝘀 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗴𝗼 𝘁𝗼 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘄𝗵𝘆? I recommend stopping by Off The Record in the basement of The Hay Adams hotel by the White House. Its eloquent, speakeasy atmosphere is perfectly complemented by its fun drink coasters that famously feature caricatures of current and former political figures. 𝟲. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁’𝘀 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗽𝗶𝗲𝗰𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗮𝗱𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘄𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗴𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗳 𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗳 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝗯𝘂𝘁 𝘄𝗶𝘀𝗵 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗸𝗻𝗲𝘄 𝗯𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗻? I would advise establishing mentorship early on with a few select professionals you look up to and checking in with them regularly on your short and long-term goals. Their broader perspective can be incredibly helpful when you're making critical decisions that will have a lasting impact on your future.

  • Today CBA launched About Debt Relief, an educational campaign that aims to help consumers learn more about their options when managing credit card debt. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/ef2XB-Kg   About Debt Relief highlights government and industry research on the potential dangers of debt settlement companies, which advertise heavily as being an all-around solution but may leave consumers with worse financial outcomes. The campaign also conveys the many ways in which credit card issuers and non-profit credit counseling firms can serve as viable partners to help consumers manage their debt. #banking #campaign #finance

  • Today we’re highlighting Lauren Williams from Capital One! Read on below to hear more about her story in our Spotlight Series. 𝟭. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁’𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘁𝗶𝘁𝗹𝗲, 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂’𝗿𝗲 𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗯𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗷𝗼𝗯? I’m Lauren Williams, Senior Communications Manager at Capital One, focusing on public affairs and advocacy communications. I’m a Maryland native and work out of our headquarters in McLean, Virginia. 𝟮. 𝗧𝗼 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗱𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗼𝘄𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘀𝘂𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗼𝗱𝗮𝘆? My faith is the foundation of all my pursuits and it has been my guiding light in determining the best path for my career. Aside from the objectively favorable career choices, faith helps me to operate in the gray and to make choices that go beyond position, profit and politics. 𝟯. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁’𝘀 𝗮 𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝗯𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗼𝗿 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗱𝗼𝗻’𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸 𝗲𝗻𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗽𝗮𝘆𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘄𝗵𝘆? Over the years communicators have assessed the role of DEI in our organizations. We have tailored our messages, shifted our investments, and curated our campaigns in an effort to represent, and speak to, the underrepresented. But, from my perspective, our practices are often unintentionally laced with the assumption that minority groups operate as a monolith.  Since I am a Black woman, I will use my own cultural background as an example. Black Americans represent roughly 13.4% of the population, and with more than 40 million people who identify as Black, this community represents a diverse array of backgrounds, expectations, political views, music, culinary taste and perspectives.  As Communicators we should do a double click on the communities or groups we want to reach – e.g., through trusted third party sources, demographic research and first-hand accounts – to support nimble and targeted campaigns. 𝟰. 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗱𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘂𝗻𝘄𝗶𝗻𝗱 𝗮𝗳𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗮 𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝗱𝗮𝘆 𝗮𝘁 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸 𝗼𝗿 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗲𝗲𝗸𝗲𝗻𝗱𝘀? Retail therapy is my usual go-to stress reliever, but if I’m being financially responsible then you can find me watching reruns of my favorite shows and trying a new recipe from The Bon Appetit Cookbook: Fast Easy Fresh. 𝟱. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁’𝘀 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗽𝗶𝗲𝗰𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗮𝗱𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘄𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗴𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗳 𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗳 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝗯𝘂𝘁 𝘄𝗶𝘀𝗵 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗸𝗻𝗲𝘄 𝗯𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗻? Be confident in your position and your perspective. Your ability to influence – to win hearts and minds with humility – will not only benefit your own outcomes, but also those of the organizations you serve. #banking #spotlight #finance
