Promoting U.S. consumer technology competitiveness through smarter trade and supply chain policy

For the second year in a row, I participated in the Economist Impact’s Global Trade and Supply Chain Summit. Here is what I learned this week: ✅Outside the United States, trade is alive and well and remains a powerful tool for promoting inclusive economic growth and job creation. The rest of the world continues to negotiate market-opening free trade agreements. More and more developing countries are negotiating FTAs with each other. ✅The U.S. is increasingly a bystander, especially at the WTO where it is reluctant to agree to new provisions on e-commerce and digital trade. Other governments are becoming impatient and ready to move on. ✅Most importantly, supply chain and procurement leaders in companies around the world face many of the same challenges, including with respect to risk assessment and mitigation, digital transformation, talent and skilling, and reducing costs. ✅In this regard, there is an imperative for companies to use artificial intelligence, blockchain, and other digital technologies to optimize their supply chains, predict and address supply chain risks, and prepare for black swan events, including future possible trade wars. ✅The international business world is watching the U.S. elections closely to determine what the trade policy path for the United States will be: more tariffs, retaliation, and chaos; or more of the same with low ambition, no new digital trade rules, and no new market access. I had a wonderful time learning from Sabina Maria Ciofu (she/her), Vashti Maharaj, Burcu Kilic, Ph.D., Stephen Olson, Luísa Santos, Sneha Susan J., Praveenkumar Miriyala, and Michael King. Many thanks to the Economist Impact and Economist team this week for organizing such a world class experience, including Anjani Trivedi John Ferguson, Caitlin M., Hannah Flynn, Oliver Sawbridge, and Elizabeth Mackie.

  • That’s a wrap! Last week, CTOs joined product planners and other industry leaders at CTA’s Technology & Standards Fall Forum to drive the consumer technology industry forward through standards development. Along with celebrating the achievements of their colleagues as a part of the Technology & Standards Awards program, attendees heard from speakers and expert-led panel discussions on clean tech innovations that can transform urban living, consumer engagement and content habits, updates on the U.S. Cyber Trust Mark, and more. Another thank you to the speakers and congratulations to the winners of CTA’s Technology Leadership and Achievement Awards!

Promoting U.S. consumer technology competitiveness through smarter trade and supply chain policy

#tariffs, which are taxes on imports that Americans pay (#tariffsaretaxes), are in the news every day. Former U.S. president Trump has proposed a 10-20% tariff on all imports from all countries and a 60% tariff on all imports from China. As such, tariffs are a central part of his campaign as the solution to every problem. While U.S. Vice President Harris has called the proposed Trump tariffs a "national sales tax", she has not disowned the tariff rate increases on certain products like electric vehicles, batteries, and critical minerals imported from China that President Biden just enacted. The Consumer Technology Association has long provided analysis and hard data on the impact of proposed tariffs on the #consumertech industry. Today we are pleased to release our newest research report "How The Proposed Trump Tariffs Increase Prices for Consumer Technology Products" (https://lnkd.in/gHK-bHiQ), which the TRADE PARTNERSHIP WORLDWIDE LLC conducted for us. The bottom line is that the proposed Trump tariffs will increase prices significantly for consumer tech products, including laptops, tablets, smartphones, and video game consoles, reducing U.S. consumer purchasing power by $90 billion. We encourage you to read the report and share it with your networks. #freetrade #notradetax #tariffshurt #maketradenotwar
