“I don’t see challenging work as being in direct opposition to also being welcoming,” [Christina Vassallo] says. “Creating a buttress of support around an exhibition, which our education department does, gives people entry points into a show. What I love about museums, especially contemporary art museums, is visitors have the opportunity in one building to be exposed to so many perspectives. Museums allow us those access points. That’s what I think is so exciting about this kind of work.” Thanks to Cincinnati Magazine for this follow-up interview with Christina Vassallo, an energetic view of the years ahead! #artmuseum #contemporaryart #leadership

Architectural Record includes "A Permanent Nostalgia for Departure" in their list of December Dates and Events. Don't miss this exhibition, which celebrates 20 years in the CAC's permanent home by examining the concept of legacy through the lens of the building's architect, Zaha Hadid. When it was built, the style was praised and reviled alike, but in addition to its iconic silhouette, it makes history as the first US museum designed by a woman. Make time this season to explore the building, the architect, and as yourself what legacy means to you. "Cincinnatians are likely familiar with two iconic modern buildings, the Terrace Plaza, and the Contemporary Arts Center, each designed by a groundbreaking female architect, Natalie de Blois and Zaha Hadid respectively. The only two buildings designed by women out of dozens of architectural landmarks (Music Hall, Union Terminal, The Ascent, Crosley Tower, etc.) across our city. Why? In 1900 there were only 39 American women who’d graduated from architecture school. Today, only 23% of registered architects are women (2023 NCARB By the Numbers). Representation in architecture matters because architects design the buildings, places, and environments that impact everyone. Having a design team that resembles the community at large helps ensure all voices are part of the conversation." Read more about this issue of representation in this excellent article from SoapboxCincy and then join the conversation on November 15 at our Panel with AIA Cincinnati #architecture #womeninarchitecture #leadership #representation #equity
