Today, as we celebrate Juneteenth, we recognize the resilience and contributions of those Africans in America and their ancestors throughout history. While the message of emancipation took until June 19, 1865, to reach Texas, the compromise to save the United States—the 13th Amendment legalizing post-conviction slavery—leaves many providing forced or cheap labor around the country, with very little hope or access to re-enter society once their sentence is complete. As attorneys, we have an ethical obligation to uphold the rule of law and protect the rights and dignity of all people, even those previously convicted of a crime. As “advocates for justice”, we have a responsibility to seek repair and restoration where injustice has occurred, particularly those harmed by the law. This Juneteenth, let us commit to those values of equal justice for all, together. Because we are #strongertogether. Happy Juneteenth! In unity, Nicholas E.
