Capella Space just wrapped up the first stage of an infrastructure baselining project, imaging over 100 major dams across the western U.S. With 90,000+ dams in the U.S., many of them aging past 90 years. This baseline imagery helps provide essential insights for scientists and engineers monitoring dam infrastructure.
Our continuous innovation in SAR technology will soon enable authorities to detect structural changes—like erosion or settling—down to just a few centimeters. In 2014, Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 went missing. Despite an exhaustive search effort involving numerous countries, the aircraft seemingly vanished without a trace. The tragic event exposed significant gaps in global monitoring capabilities, particularly over vast and remote ocean areas.
Capella Space Founder Payam Banazadeh was deeply moved by the crisis and troubled by the limitations of existing Earth observation technologies, which relied heavily on optical satellites. These satellites struggled to provide consistent data due to cloud cover and only having daytime imaging capabilities, rendering large portions of the Earth effectively invisible for much of the time.
Determined to find a solution, Capella pulled together an expert team to build an advanced SAR satellite constellation with unmatched high-resolution imaging capabilities for its ability to see through clouds, capture images at night, and deliver reliable, real-time data from anywhere on Earth.
Capella is dedicated to leveraging SAR technology for all-weather, 24/7 Earth observation. Capella's first major milestone was the launch of its testbed SAR satellite, 'Denali,' in 2018, introducing first U.S. commercial SAR satellite. This achievement was followed by the launch of 'Sequoia' in 2020 and a first-of-its-kind fully automated ordering and delivery platform for SAR, setting new standards for the quality and speed of all-weather imagery.
Today, Capella Space continues to build on this legacy, developing advanced SAR satellites that empower industries, governments, and humanitarian efforts around the world.
