Named "One of the Five Best Theaters" in the nation for young audiences by TIME magazine and winner of the 2004 Missouri Arts Award, The Coterie is a not-for-profit professional theater for youth and family audiences. Founded in 1979, its mission is to open lines of communication between races, sexes and generations by redefining children’s theatre to include families and diverse audiences. We had a great time this past weekend with Girl Scouts of NE Kansas & NW Missouri at the HORSE POWER workshop. Not only did the scouts attend the show, they also got a behind-the-scenes look at how the horse puppets work and were able to create their own puppets under the supervision of the pros at What if Puppets! Thanks to everyone that joined us 🤩

Internationally known for being a horse whisperer, among his many accolades, he started the #AmericanRoyal's first horse show. In contemporary times, Natalia (“Nate”) Edmonds loves horses, especially the one her parents bought her for her birthday. As a Black teenager, she learns about and is inspired by the legacy of #TomBass as she grapples with what modern day racism looks like. We are thrilled to have hosted best-selling author Sonia Sotomayor to workshop the new musical JUST ASK! based on her book, which will make its world premiere on The Coterie stage in January 2025. The creation of new work is at the core of The Coterie’s mission. World premieres provide us unique opportunities to broaden the range of voices featured on our stage and work with pioneering community partners, increasing access for both audience and artists.
