About us
The Council of Western State Foresters (CWSF) is a nonpartisan, nonprofit membership organization comprised of 17 western State Foresters and six U.S.-Affiliated Pacific Island Foresters. CWSF promotes the conservation, protection, and sustainable management of forests for today and generations to come by leading collective action, fostering learning, facilitating resource sharing, providing credible expertise and information, carrying out outreach and advocacy, and engaging with partners.

In August, our Executive Director, Danielle Okst, along with Dana Coelho, with the USDA Forest Service, had the privilege of presenting “Working in the Woods: A Career in Forestry” at the National Order of the Arrow BSA Convention in Boulder, CO. 🦅 They engaged over 50 teen Scouts, introducing them to the vast array of career opportunities within the forestry sector. To complement their presentation, CWSF Communications Intern Autumn O. developed a handout detailing various forestry career paths, including: 🪵 Field Operations 🤝 Community Engagement 🥽 STEM 🌲 Foresters interested in adapting this resource for their agency can reach out to info@westernforesters.org to request an editable version of the pamphlet, perfect for sharing with young adults curious about a future in forestry. Exciting developments in South Dakota’s Black Hills! The SD Resource Conservation & Forestry Division is teaming up with the USDA Forest Service Rocky Mountain Region to revitalize over 1.2 million acres of ponderosa pine forests, thanks to funding from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL). 🌲 The 2024 National Forest Legacy Program Summit, organized in partnership with the Western Forestry Leadership Coalition and the Montana Department of Fish, Wildlife, and Parks, brought together representatives from across the U.S. The summit celebrated the achievement of three million acres conserved by the Forest Legacy Program and allowed attendees to share challenges, opportunities, and innovations.
