Our TRiO Upward Bound North program hosted an eye-opening presentation on Human Trafficking, led by Sheri Combs, Director of Community and Youth Engagement at the Covenant House New Orleans, and Katie Evans, Coordinator of the Greater New Orleans Human Trafficking Task Force. Students from both Upward Bound North and South learned about the misconceptions of human trafficking, who traffickers are, the methods of online luring and grooming, and the crucial outreach services available. We are committed to educating our youth and empowering them with knowledge to stay safe. A big thank you to Sheri Combs and Katie Evans for their impactful presentation! #TRiOUpwardBound #HumanTraffickingAwareness #YouthEducation #CommunitySafety #SUSLA

Today's decision by the Supreme Court in the Johnson v. Grants Pass case sets a dangerous precedent for the quarter of a million people who sleep outside each night in America and for the millions of families who are just one missed paycheck away from homelessness. This ruling makes it easier to jail or ticket homeless people and youth for sleeping outside, which will make homelessness worse. Covenant House stands unwavering in our commitment to be there for any youth who comes to our doors. Help end youth homelessness and create opportunities for self-reliance when you make your gift today: https://lnkd.in/eJ5MB93m.

Last week, Elijah stepped up to the podium to deliver his valedictorian speech to the class of 2024 at Walter L. Cohen High School in New Orleans. He began: “For the last four years, we have pushed ourselves in our education...” For Elijah, that was an understatement. Just before his senior year, Elijah made his way to Covenant House New Orleans after a period of instability and homelessness. He was welcomed with open, loving arms. He was given a warm meal, the chance to take a shower, and a clean, safe bed to sleep in. With a firm foundation underfoot, Elijah went from worrying about where he would lay his head each night to focusing on his goals and education. He excelled, forging his own way to that podium on graduation day and securing a full-ride scholarship to Xavier University for his studies in graphic design. His story has spread worldwide through features in outlets like Good Morning America, People, and CNN. But as Covenant House New Orleans CEO Rheneisha Robertson reminds us, "without our core service - emergency shelter and transitional housing - many of our youth would not be able to make these achievements a reality." You can help us continue providing the services that unlocked Elijah's incredible potential by giving to Rheneisha's fundraiser for the class of 2024: https://lnkd.in/dnVAx52d
