A nonprofit trade organization fostering the growth and success of craft maltsters and the greater #craftmalt community.

About us

Formed in 2013 by eight craft malthouses, the Craft Maltsters Guild emphasizes quality and craftsmanship as a requirement for success. We believe that maltsters have the ability to influence positive changes and improvements in the malting industry through knowledge and communication. The Guild's mission is to promote and sustain the tradition of craft malting in North America, provide services and resources to the Association’s members, and uphold the highest quality and safety standards for Craft Maltsters. We define Craft Malt as follows: 1. Small: A Member Malthouse produces between 5 metric tons (5.5 US tons) to 10,000 metric tons (11,000 US tons) per year. 2. Local: Over 50% of grains are grown within a 500-mile radius of the Member Malthouse. 3. Independent: Each Member Malthouse must be independently owned by a 76% majority of ownership.

Initiatives that revolve around local ingredients absolutely thrill us! Earlier this month, the Oregon Agricultural Trust launched Cheers to the Land. This campaign asks craft beverage producers to showcase Oregon-grown ingredients in their beverages. This month and next, these producers will host tap takeovers, beer releases, and beer dinners with the intention to call consumers to action to choose more traceable products. Many of the beers created for this campaign include malt from craft maltsters— including Salmon Safe malt by Mainstem Malt. As we continue our series celebrating brewers and distillers who feature the Craft Malt Certified™ seal in their branding, marketing, and sales strategies, we recognize Footbridge Brewery, who feature the seal in their taproom and as a part of their website and branding. “We’ve incorporated the Craft Malt seal into our marketing campaign, aptly named ‘Be Part of Something.’ This campaign was created to showcase the brewery’s passion for local ingredients and commitment to using 95% Maine-sourced ingredients in every beer they brew,” explains Dan Pangburn, Co-Owner of Footbridge Brewery. Our inaugural Craft Malt Month was a great success! 🌾 Our membership showed up on social media, with nearly 200 posts the #CraftMaltMonth hashtag. Some of our longest-standing members like Colorado Malting Company and some of our newest members like Cold Stream Malt & Grain Co.— and everyone in between— got involved in the online conversation. Many of our members hosted events, tours, and tastings across the continent, and beyond (We see you, Malteria Monferrato)! Some of them also crafted and collaborated on fundraisers to benefit the Craft Maltsters Guild. Media across North America helped us spread the word about the Craft Malt Month initiative, and the craft malt revolution at large. Craft malt was prominent at the first Virginia Brewers Conference that took place. It was also the star of the show on RadCraft's September workshop, and a tasting with the Colorado Spirits Collective. ...And so much more! If there were Craft Malt Month superlatives, these folks would get the trophies: 🏆️ 𝙼𝙾𝚂𝚃 𝙶𝙴𝙽𝙴𝚁𝙾𝚄𝚂 : Copperworks Distilling donated $10 from every bottle of their Single Cask No. 145 to the Guild during Craft Malt Month, not to mention their donation of 8 years of barrel space to the effort while this whiskey aged. 🏆️ 𝚆𝙸𝙳𝙴𝚂𝚃 𝚁𝙰𝙽𝙶𝙸𝙽𝙶 : Riverbend Malt House enacted 8 collaboration beers across 3 states in support of Craft Malt Month! 🏆️ 𝙻𝙾𝚄𝙳𝙴𝚂𝚃 & 𝙿𝚁𝙾𝚄𝙳𝙴𝚂𝚃 : Root Shoot Malting posted about Craft Malt Month on social media almost every day of the month! They also organized four collaboration beers with breweries across Colorado's Front Range. If you're headed to GABF and exploring breweries next week— ask about 'em! 🏆️ 𝙱𝙴𝚂𝚃 𝙻𝙾𝙾𝙺𝙸𝙽𝙶 : Troubadour Maltings made custom Craft Malt Month glassware! Enough said. What other superlatives would you add? Let's share some compliments in the comments! Thank you to 𝙴𝚅𝙴𝚁𝚈𝙾𝙽𝙴 who participated in Craft Malt Month! Our upcoming newsletter will share an even more detailed recap on this initiative, and we hope to see it grow in 2025! 🌾
