Pioneering new ways to inspire wonder and imagination through monumental art.
About us
Creative Machines is a multi-disciplinary design and fabrication firm that creates interactive exhibits, kinetic rolling ball machines, site-specific sculptures, and public artwork. We make objects and environments that encourage creativity, support interaction, and transform spaces. We make dynamic experiences for museums, science centers, libraries, hospitals, university campuses, luxury hotels, transit stops, art museums, children’s museums, trade shows, professional conferences, private residences, and public spaces across the globe. Regardless of the time of day, someone somewhere is enjoying our work. At Creative Machines, we own one of the world’s best facilities for large scale interactive art, exhibits, ball machines, climbers, and more. We are one of very few companies that can take projects from conception to completion within our 77,000-square-foot facility devoted entirely to pushing the boundaries of public art and interactive exhibits. Since we are there every step of the way, we can test ideas extensively during the design process and can respond quickly to whatever obstacles or opportunities arise during fabrication. With comprehensive resources under one roof and deep connections to our community, we extend a consistency of vision to all aspects of a project.

We just won the 2024 “What Glass Can Do” competition by GGI | General Glass International with this drawing of a mythical Phoenix rising over the city of Phoenix. Creative Machines is known for monumental kinetic and light-based work, often involving the body. But we take community engagement seriously and when residents of the Maryvale neighborhood asked for a figurative piece of public art, we started creating art based on what the community said and sketched in workshops. This drawing is part of three monumental stained glass portals that create color-drenched outdoor environments when the sun shines. General Glass International has a fantastic process for printing directly to glass in a way that is beautiful, durable and suitable for permanent outdoor installations.

Making a Safe Space for Risky Play This weekend our founder Joseph O'Connell joined with Devon Hamilton, Jen Duffy, Thea Van Gorp, Greg Belew, and Michele Kelber to present a well-attended session at the ASTC 2024 conference in Chicago on "Learning from Adventure Playgrounds: Creating Safe Spaces for Risky Play". Risky Play has a number of proven benefits. Children develop resilience, problem-solving, agency – and are actually safer in the long run. " ... if the activity is bounded by adult rules, if it is stiff, formalised and dominated by the need to score points and flatter one's ego, that is not play, it is something else." – Bob Hughes

We’re proud to share one of our early creations, Bike Church, located in a community-built park on N. Granada Ave in Tucson, Arizona. This walk-in sculpture has become a landmark, serving as a gateway to the neighborhood and a vibrant symbol of public art. Bike Church celebrates Tucson’s rich cycling culture with its recycled bike parts and acts as a memorial for cyclists. Custom-designed ‘stained glass’ windows cast vibrant light by day and transform into a glowing beacon at night. Visitors can play the bike part chimes, filling the space with sound—a feature the wind also enjoys. Over the years, this piece has become a space for both joy and reflection. Mourners leave flowers for fallen cyclists, and at least one couple has even tied the knot inside its walls. What makes Bike Church truly special is the way the community has embraced and enlivened the sculpture, continually adding to its legacy and finding new, creative uses for it.
