"Much lip service is given in business and investment circles to 'stakeholder engagement,' and emerging laws require companies to carry it out as part of their human rights due diligence. But what it actually means...calls for much more systematic exploration." Liz Umlas, Senior Fellow of Croatan Institute, spoke on two panels at recent conferences covering #labor #union workers' rights and responsible #ESG investing initiatives. 📢 Must read: Bill Harrington, Senior Fellow at Croatan Institute, shares his forthcoming #book proposal on flipping the script around US #finance
"PRESENT COMPANY INCLUDED! — Make US Finance Work for Everyone" I am re-working my book proposal that describes my advocacy to make US finance serve everyone rather than mainly itself. My book will identify demonstrably flawed components of complex finance, describe how I've stopped the US CLO, RMBS, and structured debt sectors from reviving the crisis-causing flip-clause-swap-contract, and urge others to fix their sectors. I am re-working the attached document to align with editor feedback that the book focus on US finance. Gratifyingly, the editor is happy with my combative tone. I submitted the first proposal in May, then put revision on temporary hold to critique the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission Japan Capital Comparability Determination. (Oct 10 https://lnkd.in/dbnaUgNp). Elevator Pitch (p2) — "Fix finance by publicly flipping lobbyist scripts! Deploy the public sphere, every media, and U.S. law to compel regulator, practitioner, and academic engagement with your impeccable remedies, diagnoses, and assessments.” Proposed Content (p9) — "Regarding 'original research', my 25-year-and-counting, comprehensive, best-in world, largely single-handed, public-domain assessment of a widely used but little-known financial gimmick — the flip-clause-swap-contract — will be the real-world, real time, ongoing work that underpins and informs content. In a virtuous circle, the content will amplify my research. Market (p11) — "The book maps how a conscientious practitioner may navigate a hostile environment that (1) prioritizes entity survival and individual self-protection; (2) perpetuates designed-to-fail products; and (3) induces a broad array of policymakers and influencers to preserve the status quo, or even reconstitute a failed one. II "Potential take-up of advocacy . . . would likely be among practitioners with closer to 15-years or more experience. These practitioners have more agency to defy industry norms that often prioritize suppressing acknowledgement of bad practice by going with the flow and not speaking what they know. "Importantly, there will also be readers who are interested in or study the 2008 U.S. and European financial calamities, including origin, impact, and aftermath. My 25-year-and-counting work on the flip-clause-swap-contract informs economic history by identifying and dissecting a purposely obscure, self-dealing device that practitioners at Lehman, RBS, and basically every debt underwriter in the world used to knowingly under-capitalize private-label RMBS, CDOs, ABS, and other complex-finance. "There will also be readers who are interested in or study social dynamics, cultural anthropology, and theories of change in the quasi-public nexus of U.S. industry, law, and regulation. My experience documents the extent to which many people, including public servants expressly tasked with advancing the public good via systemic oversight, will tolerate if not actively promote demonstrably poor practices."

🌱 Two takeaways from the 2024 Regenerative Food Systems Investment Forum: Christi Electris (Executive Director), Priscilla Trinh (Communications Manager), and Dorothy Suput (Senior Fellow) attended the annual gathering, featuring a host of panels and workshops centered on transparent dialogue, and ways to deploy capital in support of regenerative agriculture. Plus they had an inspiring field day at the Savory Institute's West Bijou Campus bison ranch. 🌳 Christi: I come away energized and inspired from joining the large gathering of mission-aligned individuals and firms innovating along both the financial and regenerative agricultural value chains. I am struck by how much the space has grown so much since we at Croatan Institute began working on how capital can be leveraged to build soil health and community wealth in our 2019 Soil Wealth report. 🌎 Priscilla: Scale, scale, scale. It's estimated that $200-450 billion is required to finance global transitions to regenerative food systems. At RFSI alone, $20B in assets were represented. Change is possible. I appreciated the inclusion of farmers, ranchers, and landowners in the room, and hope to see more at the next events. A humbling reminder from Byron Shelton that stuck with me while touring Savory Institute's hub was: "The only place you can actually control the water cycle is in this top layer of soil.” Many thanks to the organizing efforts of Sarah Day Levesque, Rachel Ringle, and Bjorn Broekman for an amazing convening! A fantastic example of #regenerative, regional suppy chains! We're proud to partner with TS Designs and their newest campaign: Know Your Clothing. ICYMI, here was our last collab with Solid State Clothing: https://lnkd.in/gtMJZBrm
As my friend Russ Stoddard mentioned yesterday, it's officially beanie season, and our journey with beanies continues. Our first beanie was a collaboration with Carolina Textile District, Fonta Flora Brewery, Material Return, LLC and InnovaKnits, LLC. We learned a lot from that project and are excited to soon launch our next-generation beanie, which continues our commitment to transparency and sustainability. Recognizing that most natural dye materials are imported, this year we’re growing marigolds right here at TS Designs. Our first beanie project used "deadstock" wool and contained 10% nylon. This time, we are sourcing 100% superwashed wool directly from our friend Jeanne Carver from Shaniko Wool Company, LLC, and partnering with Jason Wilkins at InnovaKnits to design and knit a product free of any synthetic fibers. Our new beanies will feature a new patch made from 100% cotton, sewn on with cotton thread. We remain committed to manufacturing the highest quality beanies, using the most transparent supply chain—zero plastics, no microplastics, and fully biodegradable. Who made your beanie, and where was it made? Help stop the madness of the broken aparrel industry and own your label! Follow us at Solid State Clothing, these beanies will be available soon! Our new round of grant funding kicks off today! We’re pleased to offer both planning (up to $25k) and implementation (up to $250k) grants to community-led organizations, Tribal Nations, and community-based coalitions strengthening food systems and fostering the leadership and empowerment of Tribal, Indigenous, Black, Latinx, Asian, and immigrant communities in equitable food procurement. With these grants, Growing Justice Fund seeks to catalyze change that will deliver economic benefits to historically marginalized communities and help close the equity gap for smaller food producers and businesses — while contributing to wealth-building and cultural sustainability in their communities. For more details on eligible projects and organizations, visit https://lnkd.in/eUC4rKuk, and register for our informational webinar on October 23 at 10am PT/1pm ET (live interpretation and a recording will be available): bit.ly/gj24-webinar Please help spread the word and share this post widely!

The Piedmont Agrarian Collaborative (PAC) website has launched, https://www.pac.farm and this past Sunday was a beautiful day to plant a variety of fall vegetables. It was an all-hands-on-deck effort, with a major push to get our starts in the ground at Henry and Machaven farms. Shout out to Emily Stasiak for building the website, and to Edgar and JR from our farm team for their hard work. Piedmont Agrarian Collaborative will strengthen the connection between local farmers and the community in ways that farmers markets and CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) programs alone cannot, all while maintaining full transparency about where the food comes from and who the farmers are. If you're local, we invite you to join the platform. For our friends from afar, we appreciate your support as we build out this online, local focused food hub.
