What do you do? I help clients identify actionable opportunities for continuous improvement across their Turnaround Management and Operations organizations. Whether they operate a single unit, an entire site, or a large manufacturing network, our clients share a strong commitment to sustainable performance improvement in turnaround activities. My role involves collaborating with executives, directors, managers, and technical and operational teams. Together, we conduct a comprehensive assessment of their current turnaround processes, practices, and organization. This analysis helps pinpoint the most high-impact actions they can take to achieve world-class turnaround performance. What do you enjoy most about your role? One of the most rewarding aspects of my role is building relationships with passionate refining and manufacturing professionals across North America. During consulting engagements, we develop a deep understanding of their operations. This transparency reveals the exceptional professionalism and dedication that these talented individuals possess. The level of sincerity I consistently encounter reinforces my pride in working within the refining and manufacturing industry. What are key focus areas in your work? My focus areas encompass both the core principles of turnaround management and the unique nuances specific to each client, site, and often, even individual units. While turnaround continuous improvement has traditionally focused on the turnaround management phase, significant opportunities exist in the operations bookends – from de-commissioning and handover to maintenance, to commissioning and startup after major mechanical completion. Many facilities acknowledge this potential for improvement but may hesitate to embark on such initiatives. My role involves showcasing successful industry-wide practices in optimizing these "operations bookends" and demonstrating how these advancements can translate into success at their site. Ultimately, our goal is to empower clients to delight our clients and achieve operational excellence through a holistic approach to turnaround management. In this post, we will spotlight one of our Senior Consultants, Dale Clarke, with a few Q&As to help you get to know our team and hear how we aim to serve our clients with excellence. What do you do? I assist our clients on their Turnaround (TA) improvement journey. This includes coaching/mentoring and assessing practices and risks to success. CruzAlta’s readiness review methodology (CAPE) is a proven approach and enables us identify the specific opportunities for improving the work processes and practices and helping site leadership teams engage with and drive the TA process. What do you enjoy most about your role? For me, spending time with clients and their team members means being part of the team, making new friends, and seeing teams succeed. I really enjoy coaching and mentoring our clients on the TA work process and organizational effectiveness. To me, TA teams are like a big family that finds joy in leveraging ideas to support each other and celebrating together through both difficult and rewarding times. I find the most significant fulfillment in being a part of our client TA teams through the preparation phase and then assisting the team post TA review the metrics (Health, Safety and Environment, Schedule, Cost, and the Work Process). Reviewing accomplishments and opportunities as a team and seeing the ownership by the team members to continuously improve is so enjoyable. It’s rewarding to see team members demonstrate growth as they identify and suggest possible mitigation plans on the opportunities to improve the next outage. What are key focus areas in your work? I’m a huge supporter in a TA work process along with the operating disciplines that support it. I serve as a mentor in teaching and training individuals in the work process and being part of their journey from kick off to the wrap-up event or anywhere in between. Part of the process is understanding and executing the teams’ roles and responsibilities. Once everyone knows their expectations within the team regarding operations, project, and maintenance, a “One Team” concept can then be developed and executed. I’ve had the great satisfaction and honor of being part of the “One Team” concept nationally and globally. What are your end goals with clients? My end goals are for each event site to improve work process from being unpredictable to predictable, resulting in a competitive advantage. My end game is that the partnership with the clients through my work at CruzAlta sets a satisfying standard for TAs and gives our clients the knowledge to be prepared and excited for the execution. CruzAlta is seeking experienced Operations Consultants to join our growing team. In this role, you'll play a key role in enhancing our clients' turnaround optimization journey. In this post, we want to spotlight one of our Operations Consultants, Carl Pitts, with a few Q&As to help you get to know our team and hear firsthand how we aim to serve our clients. What do you do? I serve our clients on their TA improvement journey focused on the TA Operations/Production organization. This includes leading interactive operations deep dive workshops, challenging and improving mechanical and operations planning/scheduling practices, enhancing capital project work processes and practices, and collaboratively delivering CruzAlta’s CAPE readiness methodology with TA Management consultants. I also work regularly with clients’ TA leadership team to help them with the preparation for a successful event. What do you enjoy most about your role? I really enjoy mentoring TA people and teams. More specifically, I enjoy helping identify improvement opportunities and helping clients implement innovative solutions on their journey to successful TA events; this is a means to “give back” to the industry that I grew up in and pass on my experience as a means for continuously improving in all aspects of the TA process (i.e. equipment strategies, work selection, planning, estimating, scheduling and all aspects of execution, operations practices, etc.). What are key focus areas in your work? Key elements in my work include all aspects of TA readiness and specifically TA operations preparations. I also focus on shutdown and clearing/decon activities, managing the mechanical window, and preparing for and starting up the operating unit(s). We spend a significant amount of time focusing on the shutdown and startup phases of the event, and how they interface with mechanical handover. Gaining efficiencies in those areas will shorten the duration of the “bookend” windows to minimize waste and maximize production. What are your end goals with clients? As a CruzAlta Artisan, I partner with our clients to increase the probability for a predictable TA event by helping them navigate through the preparation and execution phases to identify and capitalize on continuous improvement opportunities.
