Today, the Connecticut State Department of Education's Talent and Turnaround Offices hosted the 3rd annual Increasing Educator Diversity Conference. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona gave virtual remarks and Commissioner Charlene M. Russell-Tucker gave welcome remarks and spoke to the need for a teacher workforce that is reflective of its students, followed by a keynote address from Dr. Pedro A. Noguera, who addressed how teachers can make a difference for all students. In the audience were the next generation of Connecticut educators – participants in our Ed Rising and NextGen Educators program, as well as recipients of our Aspiring Educators Scholarship grant. Thank you, Dr. Noguera for joining us in Connecticut and to Quinnipiac University for hosting this conference!

Connecticut Education Commissioner Charlene M. Russell-Tucker today announced that Julia Miller, a civics teacher at Metropolitan Business Academy in New Haven, has been named Connecticut’s 2025 Teacher of the Year—the state’s highest honor recognizing exceptional educators. Commissioner Russell-Tucker, alongside State Board of Education Vice Chairperson Erin Benham, New Haven Mayor Justin Elicker, Superintendent Dr. Madeline Negrón, and other state and local officials, recognized Miller with the announcement during a school assembly to celebrate her award. The event brought together students, teachers, and school staff to honor Miller's remarkable contributions to education. Today, the Connecticut State Department of Education hosted its annual Performance Matters Forum at the Connecticut Convention Center. Commissioner Charlene M. Russell-Tucker gave welcome remarks highlighting the Department’s theme – A Universe of Opportunities – and the focus areas for the school year while Joel Moore and Zeke Perez of Education Commission of the States gave the keynote address on national education policy trends on student wellness. Thank you, Joel and Zeke, for joining us to speak to our districts! One of CSDE’s continued focus areas for the 2024-2025 school year is to “support safe and healthy learning environments for students and school staff with continued attention to addressing their mental health needs.”
