The Future of Storytelling right here 👇🏽 Grateful to everyone who came out to listen to our panel at the Chapman Entrepreneurship Center. In case you missed it, here were my favorite key takeaways that stood out to me from each of the speakers: Caleb Ward: “Be a good person.” - People hire other people they want to spend time with. Be easy to work with and just be a good human. It will take you places. Richard Yelland: “Storytelling can create positive change for people and our planet.” - The power of putting cameras in people’s hands is incredible. By highlighting untold stories, it can lead to making waves in the real world. Zara Abraham: “Know the business.” - It won’t matter how beautiful your story is if you don’t know the business. You’ve got to know the players and how money moves in this industry. Michael Martinez: “The big opportunity is figuring out how to monetize streaming platforms.” - Executives and studios know how to monetize cable, but they haven’t cracked the code on how to monetize streaming. There’s huge opportunity here. Leah de Leon: “Know your own story and be able to articulate why you’re the best person to tell this story.” - To get to the heart of the story, you need to personally be invested. America is the only nation in the world built on purpose, and why the stories of those pursuing the mission at this country's center are a never-ending source of inspiration, especially when we face critical social and environmental challenges. While attending my son Jackson Yelland's commencement at Kenyon College, I was moved by this reading of Lyndon B. Johnson from Ben Gimbel, a Kenyon College Baseball teammate of Jackson's and incoming Harvard Law School student. When thinking of our country's founding mission of the pursuit of freedoms for all, it's a source of hope that if we all can align on purpose, rather than short-term financial or political gains, we can overcome our differences. Never have these words rung more true - thank you, Ben, Kenyon College, and, Lyndon B. Johnson - for keeping these high ideals and deeper truths at the top of our minds at a critical juncture in our nation's history. It's also perhaps equally important, as I've brought up in my recent talks at the University of San Diego, Presidio Graduate School, and Georgetown University, that how we continue to shape our personal narratives, the stories of our brands and non-profits, and our collective story of this country and the global community, can give us a more hopeful and sustainable path moving forward. "This was the first nation in the history of the world to be founded with a purpose. The great phrases of that purpose still sound in every American heart, North and South: "All men are created equal"--"government by consent of the governed"--"give me liberty or give me death." Well, those are not just clever words, or those are not just empty theories. Portfolio Project: The Birth of the Endless Summer (American Independent Documentary Film) Masterson Communications’ director Miles Masterson has written a book on the life of South African surfing and Hobie Catting pioneer John Whitmore, so he was recruited by California-based film production company Curtis Birch, Inc. to assist in the production of the South African segment of ‘The Birth of The Endless Summer’, a documentary on the genesis and impact of Bruce Brown’s iconic 1960s surfing film, ‘The Endless Summer’. The 2021 film is the brainchild of renowned American surf and documentary filmmaker and producer Richard Yelland. The original ‘The Endless Summer’ came about largely due to a chance meeting between John and pioneering American surf traveller and industry pioneer Dick Metz in 1960 in Cape Town. John had discovered surf at Cape St. Francis, which ultimately led to Dick visiting the Eastern Cape and telling his friend Bruce Brown about it, which led to Bruce including South Africa in his groundbreaking travelogue. 'The Endless Summer' earned its maker an Oscar nomination and was for many decades the most-watched documentary worldwide. ‘The Birth of the Endless Summer’ traces Dick’s pioneering backpacking journey around the world in the late 1950s and early 1960s, which Bruce followed in reverse a few years later, resulting in ‘The Endless Summer’, highlighted by their discovery of “that perfect wave” at ‘Bruce’s Beauties’ in St Francis. The film documents the massive effect Bruce’s opus had on global surf culture, catapulting the fringe sport of surfing into global mainstream consciousness, and how it fast-tracked the development of South African surfing and the country as a global surf destination. Credited as an Associate Producer, Miles was hired as a project consultant and as a ‘fixer’  to organise production for the South African leg of ‘The Birth of the Endless Summer’. He also appears as an interviewee in the movie. His other roles included setting up interviews, historical research and fact-checking, a script consultancy, photo research, photo editing, and organising photographic and interview releases. Still packing out audiences worldwide to this day and recently syndicated on PBS television in the US, ‘The Birth of the Endless Summer’ has won several awards, including the Best Action Sports Film/Audience Award at the Newport Beach Film Festival in 2021. www.capestfrancisfilm.com

A lot of people want to know, how do you fill a theater these days without a big Hollywood media buy? It takes a powerful story that’s well told—and my latest doc feature, Birth of the Endless Summer, continues to provide a live screening experience that I’d choose every time (packed house or not). I started this cinema tour in the summer of 2023. And on November 17th, just over two years since our sold out world premiere at the Newport Beach Film Festival, it seemed as if we’d finally arrived. It had taken 26 months to land on our most special Birth of the Endless Summer screening to date. Nearly two hundred stoked individuals came to our Central Coast premiere screening last Friday at the Lighthouse Cinema 4 in Pacific Grove, CA. That’s what I call a story with lasting impact. Thanks to the great communities of Carmel, Monterey, Pacific Grove and Santa Cruz for filling the place and making it an amazing night! Produced through the generous support of David Olsen, founder of the Kelp Journal, who had this to say about the night: “Honestly, everyone had a great time, lots of great commentary. It was special.
