Building financial capability for Charlotte's economically-vulnerable families.
About us
Common Wealth Charlotte (CWC) is an innovative non-profit organization providing financial empowerment to Charlotte’s economically-vulnerable families through financial education coupled with access to traditional, yet specially-designed banking products and services, including 0% interest loans. CWC's trauma-informed financial education (TIFE) curriculum results in a more financially-capable workforce, producing long-lasting change and creating success for both employee and employer. TIFE is a new best practice introduced into the Charlotte region by CWC, and involves a deep understanding and recognition of the physical, psychological, and emotional trauma experienced by our most fragile working poor. It accomplishes its effort by empowering clients in both classroom and one-to-one settings, create an environment of safety, trustworthiness, transparency, peer support, mutual respect, consumer choice, and culturally relevant discourse. CWC's unique approach provides access to a re-banking program and donor-funded loan collateral pool, allowing its credit union partner to bank and make 0% interest loans (called Opportunity Loans) to clients with otherwise insufficient credit scores. These services enable clients to start on a pathway of upward mobility and break out of the cycle of poverty by providing an affordable alternative for depositing paychecks, addressing financial emergencies, refinancing existing predatory debt, and paying off items that negatively affect credit scores.

As we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, we recognize the incredible impact of community partnerships in empowering our families! As Charlotte Bilingual Preschool says, “Partnering with VITA Latino has been invaluable, as their mission of financial education and empowerment aligns with [our] goal of supporting families’ long-term success. Their personalized counseling and workshops provide critical resources for building financial stability for our immigrant families. Most significantly, VITA Latino’s free, in-language tax preparation services at our location have helped families confidently navigate the tax process, removing barriers and fostering trust while ensuring they receive the full financial benefits available to them.” At Common Wealth Charlotte, we are proud to collaborate with organizations that help further support our Spanish-speaking initiative Buenas Finanzas Carolinas and its program VITA Latino. Together, we strive to provide essential financial education and resources that uplift underserved communities, helping families build a brighter and more secure future. #HispanicHeritageMonth #cwclt #CommonWealthCharlotte #Charlotte #FinancialLiteracy #FinancialCapability #FinancialFreedom

Truly a wonderful experience for everyone." At Common Wealth Charlotte, we believe in empowering our community with financial education and resources to build stronger futures. Together, through programs like Buenas Finanzas Carolinas, we’re helping individuals achieve financial independence, homeownership, and entrepreneurial success. #HispanicHeritageMonth #cwclt #CommonWealthCharlotte #Charlotte #FinancialLiteracy #FinancialCapability #FinancialFreedom
