#DidYouKnow? In October 1907 Sir Thomas Lewis, one of the pioneers of ECG use in Cardiology, completed his Doctor of Medicine. Sir Thomas Lewis, born on December 26, 1881, in Wales, is one of the most influential figures in the early field of cardiology. His meticulous work with the first electrocardiograph (ECG) laid the foundation for many modern practices in cardiovascular medicine, making him an eminence in the understanding of heart rhythm disorders. By 1900, he had earned a Bachelor of Science degree from University College Cardiff and continued his medical studies at University College Hospital (UCH) in London, where he achieved his MBBS in 1905, earning a gold medal for his excellence. In 1907, Lewis obtained his Doctor of Medicine (M.D.), and his career took root at UCH, where he would spend the rest of his life. In 1908, Lewis introduced electrocardiography (ECG) to clinical practice, only a few years after the technology was pioneered by Willem Einthoven, with whom Lewis corresponded. His work on heart disease was not just groundbreaking; it was transformative, bringing the study of cardiac arrhythmias to the forefront of clinical research. In 1909, he co-founded the journal Heart with James MacKenzie, which he later renamed Clinical Science in 1933. He also founded the Medical Research Society in 1930, underscoring his dedication to fostering scientific inquiry and collaboration. Despite suffering a heart attack at the age of 45, Sir Thomas Lewis remained active in his field, though he gave up his habit of heavy smoking. Sadly, his life was cut short by coronary heart disease in 1945, yet his legacy lives on in the fields of cardiology and medical research.
