Alex Gehle is a husband and father of three from St. Petersburg, Florida. In January 2024, he was playing flag football with his son when he started to feel nausea and tightness in his chest. He decided to go to the emergency room and shortly after arriving he went into cardiac arrest. Alex coded five times, before doctors made the decision to transport him to Orlando Health Bayfront Hopsital. Dr. Ravikiran Korabathina implanted the Impella CP and four days later Dr. F Curtis Bryan escalated him to the Impella 5.5. After two weeks of support Alex’s heart had recovered enough for Impella to be weaned and removed. Six days after Impella was removed he was able to leave the hospital. Earlier this month, Alex was gracious enough to share his story with our team as part of #Impella25 celebrations!

Chris Pfitzer, 53, is an active husband, father, and construction worker from Tempe, Arizona. In March 14, 2023, a couple of weeks after winning his basketball league championship, Chris experienced flu-like symptoms at home. Recognizing something was wrong, his wife called 911. Chris went into cardiac arrest while being transported to Banner Desert Medical Center. Dr. Sulay Patel placed stents and implanted Impella CP to allow Chris’ heart to rest and recover. After two days of support, Impella was weaned and removed and he returned home to his family 10 days later. Thank you, Chris, for being one of the 25 amazing patients who helped us celebrate 25 years of Impella this month! #Impella25

Lisa Smitley began experiencing severe shortness of breath in 2017. She was evaluated by multiple cardiologists who determined her heart function was severely reduced with an ejection fraction of 10%. Physicians told Lisa she needed stents placed and possibly open heart surgery but she was too high-risk for the surgery. She continued to advocate for herself and found a local cardiologist who knew she needed a Protected PCI and referred her to Dr. Michael Flaherty. In May 2017, Dr. Flaherty performed a Protected PCI with Impella CP to clear Lisa’s blockages and place multiple stents. The following day, Lisa was discharged home and today she has a normal heart function. As part of Abiomed's celebration of 25 years of Impella this month, Lisa was kind enough to visit us in Danvers and share her amazing story with our communications team. #Impella25

Many dedicated people have played a part in the 330,000 patients treated with Impella in the past 25 years. In honor of this milestone, we spoke to some of the people on our team who have been with us since the first patient, to ask about their favorite memories from their time with Abiomed. Vernon Rothrock is one of those dedicated people. #Impella25
