Inside China's Renewed Interest in Africa. During the latest Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC), the Asian powerhouse pledged over $50bn in financial support to the continent. That marks a resurgence in Beijing’s commitments at the triennial summits after a dip in 2021 and comes as it ramps up efforts to expand an already significant influence on the continent. Over the past decade, China’s investments have driven Africa’s infrastructure boom through the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). And in 2023, trade between the two regions hit record levels. But going forward, the stakes are much higher than just trade or infrastructure. Africa's rich deposits of cobalt and lithium make it crucial for the #energytransition and the future of the global economy. The continent's strategic importance will only grow as major economic powers compete for its resources and partnerships. Get more context on China's latest push in Africa here: https://lnkd.in/dArKCJ_G And follow us now to stay ahead of the curve on key trends in Africa’s investment landscape. #ChinaAfrica #BRI #GlobalTrade #GreenEnergy #InvestingInAfrica #DabaFinance #FOCAC

Beyond Jumia & Swvl: African Stocks for Foreign Investors. In April 2019, Jumia Group made history as the first African tech startup to launch an IPO on the NYSE. It was hailed as Africa's answer to Amazon, a major milestone for the continent’s tech ecosystem. Similarly, Swvl, a mobility startup that began in Cairo in 2017, went public in 2022 via a SPAC merger at a $1.5bn valuation, bypassing the traditional IPO route. Both companies caught the attention of global investors, raising hopes for Africa’s tech landscape. However, the reality so far has been less promising. Jumia’s stock has dropped over 90% from its peak, and Swvl has faced delisting threats. These challenges have raised concerns about the global perception of African equities. Yet, the continent is still home to high-quality, dividend-paying stocks with significant growth potential. From giant telcos MTN, SONATEL, Safaricom PLC, and Orange to cement stocks and industrials, discover top African equities that deserve your attention on the Daba blog. Diversifying Your Portfolio With Alternatives. There’s been a growing shift towards alternative investments (alternatives) in the investing world in recent years. Alternatives are assets that fall outside the conventional investment categories of stocks, bonds, and cash, and can help achieve growth, reduce volatility, and enhance portfolio diversification They include a wide array of assets such as #privateequity, #venturecapital, #hedgefunds, #realestate, #commodities, and even tangible assets like art or collectibles. Despite their increase in popularity, many investors still see them as an exclusive, narrowly defined investment category reserved for a select few. This perception, however, is far from accurate. In one of our latest pieces, we explore how these assets are breaking out of their niche status and becoming increasingly accessible to a wider audience of investors through platforms like Daba. Curious to learn more? 👉 Read the full blog on our website to discover how alternative investments can fit into your strategy: https://lnkd.in/dGDchEvZ

As inflation appears to have peaked in most countries, imminent interest rate cuts in the United States and Europe are expected to reshape the global investment landscape. Interest rates affect everything from borrowing costs to coupons on debt instruments like bonds. When low, they tend to benefit stocks, particularly in growth-oriented sectors. Meanwhile, yields on fixed-income assets (bonds, treasury bills, etc.) decline. In this potential new rate environment, Africa may present opportunities for high-yield seekers. Reports show foreign investors are already turning to the continent's emerging and frontier markets as their sovereign bonds offer higher risk-adjusted returns. For instance, South Africa’s local currency bonds have bested global peers this year. But the real gains may just be starting with more investments seen flocking to African government bonds. Read the full article on the implications of interest rate cuts and where to invest next here: https://lnkd.in/dRK_meJC And let us know your thoughts in the comments. #Investing #Africa #InterestRates #EmergingMarkets #Daba #SovereignBonds #Eurobonds #SovereignCredit #TreasuryBonds --------------------- You can get our latest news, insights, and educational blogs when they drop on WhatsApp. Click this invite link to follow our channel: https://lnkd.in/ddryNfPk And for your dose of major economic and investing trends in Africa, delivered every week in our Next Frontier newsletter - you can subscribe for free here: https://lnkd.in/d2kdnm6c ⚠️ This post is for informational purposes only and does not constitute financial or investment advice. The latest Henley & Partners - The Firm of Global Citizens® Passport Index highlights the stark disparities in global mobility for African nations. Somalia's passport, granting visa-free access to a mere 35 countries, ranks as the continent's weakest in 2024. That contrasts sharply with powerhouses like Seychelles and Mauritius, whose citizens enjoy travel privileges akin to Europeans, as seen in an earlier post. Burundi, Cameroon, and the Republic of Congo lead the pack among the lower-ranked African passports, each offering entry to 50 visa-free destinations. The rankings underscore the complex interplay of geopolitics, economics, and diplomacy that shapes international travel access. For many African nations, limited passport power could hinder business opportunities and cultural exchange, potentially impacting economic growth and global integration. Visit our website to read our article on the travel freedom enjoyed by Africans: https://lnkd.in/dHQhBY5U What do you think about this ranking?
