About us
Since 1935, the Dallas Hebrew Free Loan Association (DHFLA) has provided life-changing loans to members of the Greater Dallas Jewish community. As a social lender, we care deeply about providing financial opportunity and creating financial security for couples, families, individuals and small businesses in the North Texas Jewish community through our interest-free loan programs. Rooted in Jewish Tradition: Our work of providing no interest loans to the Greater Dallas Jewish community is rooted in the Jewish tradition of Gemilut Chasadim, the giving of loving kindness, which sees helping people establish a financially secure future as the highest form of charity. Our zero interest loans not only provide hope and peace-of-mind through the relief of immediate financial strains, but they give borrowers the opportunity to meet their challenges with dignity. A Bridge to Financial Stability: The Dallas Hebrew Free Loan Association’s (DHFLA) affordable interest-free loans bridge the gap between need and achievement, fostering financial stability. DHFLA’s no interest loans ensure students can afford college and graduate school, small businesses remain vibrant, Jewish community members can cover emergency expenses, parents can afford the experiences that deepen their children’s Jewish identities, individuals can get the medical treatments to cure what ails them, families with special needs can give their loved one the support they need, couples can become parents, and more. Gifts that Continue Giving: DHFLA interest-free loans are funded entirely through community donations which continually recycle to others through loan repayments, creating many times the original value of the gift and supporting members of the Greater Dallas Jewish community in perpetuity.

On Oct. 7, 2023, Israel experienced the deadliest attack on Jews since the Holocaust and the start of an ongoing war. Jewish communities stepped up to offer support and resources to cope with the aftermath. Including those in the international Jewish free loan movement. In Nov. 2023, 17 members of the International Association of Jewish Free Loans (IAJFL), including the Dallas Hebrew Free Loan Association (DHFLA) in partnership with the Dallas Jewish Community Foundation (DJCF) and individual donors from our community, showed solidarity by creating a program to help our sister agency Ogen, the Israel Free Loan Association. Ogen experienced a surge in demand for loans from individuals and families due to the attacks and ongoing conflict. To ensure Ogen could continue distributing no interest loans, the members of the IAJFL made a generous no interest loan to Ogen so it could meet the need. IAJFL lent nearly $3.4 million to Ogen for the purpose of zero interest loans to families and individuals financially affected by the conflict post-Oct. 7th. DHFLA in partnership with the DJCF and contributions from the Dallas community, contributed over $133,000 to this historic effort. The funds were allocated to an emergency loan fund which disbursed 350 loans with an average size of $10,000. These 350 loans assisted approximately 1,225 people including reservists, evacuees, and individuals who experienced loss of income and property damage. Through Sept. 2024, the loans made through this emergency effort have a 100% repayment rate – a testament to the no interest loan model of community support. One Story: When the war started, Naama, a teacher in her early 30's, lived in Ashkelon, in southern Israel. She supported her elderly parents. Naama's apartment had no bomb shelter. Early in the war, she was evacuated. While evacuated, two rockets hit her building. The first shattered all the windows. The second fell in the parking lot, destroying all cars parked there, including Naama’s. Naama was also going through a surrogacy process and expecting her first child. Ogen's $12,000 loan provided a lifeline. It allowed Naama to purchase a car while waiting for government compensation and granted her financial stability during a months-long school closure, ensuring she could navigate the uncertainties ahead. Today, Naama is the mother of a baby boy, back to teaching and supporting her parents. In three years, half of the IAJFL loan will be repaid to the 17 member agencies that participated. That means those loan funds will be recycled back to DHFLA so that we can assist members of our Jewish community in need. The remaining funds will be repaid in five years. This is what Kol yisrael arevim zeh bazeh – all Jews are guarantors for one another – is all about. Thank you to all who supported this effort. Am Yisrael Chai! #Jewishcommunity #interestfreeloans #zerointerestloans #dallasjewishcommunity #NoInterestLoans #october7attack #Israel #AmYisraelChai
