October perspectives from DJCF CEO Megan Hyman
About us
The Dallas Jewish Community Foundation and the Southwest Community Foundation have worked with compassion and drive to improve our community and the world through the development and stewardship of philanthropic resources of donors and community partners. Consistent with this mission, these two Foundations have contributed more than $160 million in charitable distributions in the last decade to support a wide range of philanthropic interests, including education, human services, the arts, and faith-based organizations. Southwest Community Foundation is a DBA of the Dallas Jewish Community Foundation. Staffed by the same people you have come to know and trust. We can meet your needs under either name with the same commitment to customer service and philanthropy for nearly 50 years. By providing the highest level of personal attention, we continuously help transform our fundholders’ philanthropic objectives into realities. Through the Dallas Jewish Community Foundation and the Southwest Community Foundation, donor directed philanthropy may be in the form of designated, endowment, field of interest or donor advised funds for current giving or to perpetuate philanthropy from one generation to the next. One excellent vehicle utilized at the Foundation to memorialize or honor loved ones is our named scholarship program. Additionally, our legacy initiative for the future has reached an estimated $260 million in bequests and endowment commitments*. Our outstanding team of volunteers, professional leadership, and experienced staff justify our proud standing as two of the premier community foundations in the State of Texas. Since our establishment, we have diligently pursued excellence. Of our many accomplishments, the one we value most is the trust and confidence of our fundholders and their advisors. *As of December 2022

Our team benefits from Janine Tandy’s wisdom and insights in our regular staff meetings, where she leads us through a group mindfulness session. The work of the foundation requires that we approach every engagement with an open mind, positivity and respect. This investment in our own wellbeing enables us to show up fully for our community as philanthropic partners.

Honouring World Mental Health Awareness week ~ and deeply appreciating this year's focus is on prioritizing mental health in the workplace, something I am passionate about offering in my work. We spend a good percentage of our adult life in a professional settings, engaging in so many different activities, so it is so important to understand why addressing wellbeing at work is part of our whole person self-care! For many of us, too, work has a social component, a relational element, and often whatever is going on in our home or non-work life, comes with us into the rest of our day, potentially impacting how we relate to ourselves and to our colleagues in these settings. Another influencing aspect of work life on mental health is that there can be a host of stressors that come with the the specifics or tasks of the job we do - for instance, if we work on front line healthcare we are dealing with people's lives and bodies, thier families; or working within schools and school systems; or high stress financial environments just to name a few. Even if we love what we do, it is never totally free from stress. Therefore we need to develop skillful ways of meeting challenges in this substantial part of our life, to learn how to safely and effectively emotionally regulate, manage stress or difficult conversations and meetings, to work with where we are in any given moment compassionately and in simple and effective ways. This is one of the many reasons why I love offering my corporate mindfulness practices. I care deeply about bringing the lineage and wisdom traditions in which I have trained in for a long time, and translating them into settings, teams both large and small, to meet people where they are to help each individual within each organization, meet themselves where and how they are. If nourishing your team resonates with you and you are wanting to create a more supportive work atmosphere, I am here for this. Do reach out to me to discuss how I can be of help.

“To be a Jew is to be an agent of hope in a world serially threatened by despair. Every ritual, every mitzvah, every syllable of the Jewish story, every element of Jewish law, is a protest against escapism, resignation or the blind acceptance of fate. Judaism is a sustained struggle, the greatest ever known, against the world that is, in the name of the world that could be, should be, but is not yet. There is no more challenging vocation. Throughout history, when human beings have sought hope they have found it in the Jewish story. Judaism is the religion, and Israel the home, of hope.” -Rabbi Jonathan Sacks May their memories forever be a blessing.
