I saw a post by Robynn Storey recently asking her followers what companies can do to help reduce the types of poor candidate experiences we're seeing in the market nowadays. I'm talking ghosting, no responses to application submissions, fake job posts - the list goes on! Here was my response: "Companies need to invest more in recruiting support! With the recent layoffs, many companies reduced their recruiting teams down to the studs - this puts extra work on the recruiters that remain to spend time sourcing cold leads, go through hundreds of resumes, interview candidates, schedule candidates, update the ATS, negotiate offers, and more all while managing nearly double the amount of searches that they would have previously. The influx of available candidates on the market today is staggering, and has caused inbound applications to rise significantly. Going through 200+, 500+, 1,000+ applications for any given position is a job in and of itself, and recruiters sadly don't have the bandwidth to go through every single one (speaking as a recruiter who genuinely is struggling to get through every application she receives). Having AI and automation integrated into your ATS is an incredibly helpful tool, but it's not perfect, and having human eyes go through resumes is still valuable. Companies really should re-think how significantly they're reducing their recruiting teams so we can continue to give candidates the attention and respect they deserve!" A highly motivated job seeker applied to 226 jobs in one month. She used a combination of job boards, LinkedIn, company websites. She received 78 auto rejections. 4 contacts from recruiters. 2 were legitimate. 2 asked her up front for her social security number and home address. She received 17 messages from people trying to sell her job seeking services. She landed 9 interviews. 1 person did not show up. 1 person did not know what position she applied for. 1 company did a phone screen and passed. 1 company brought her in for an in person interview and ghosted her for a month before asking her to come in for a 2nd interview. She passed. 2 companies made offers, one lowball, one too embarrassing to mention. 3 companies had legitimate interview processes. One lasted for 6 weeks. One is still ongoing (1 month in). The other was 2 interviews, and an offer - 3 weeks in total. She took the 1st job offered. She's relieved, exhausted, excited and hopeful all at the same time. Here is what the numbers don't say... She did NOT hear back from over 100 applications. 100!! That means that either they are fake jobs, or aren't big enough to have even the most basic auto rejection tools. They say hiring is broken. I think the hiring process is dead. It needs a total, lifesaving, and aggressive reboot. How should we go about it? #resumewriting #jobsearch #hiring
