College student mental health is in crisis. 70% of students have struggled with their mental health since starting college, according to data from a U.S. News survey. The average annual caseload for a typical full-time college counselor is about 120 students, with some centers averaging more than 300 students per counselor. Jennifer Contarino Panning PsyD started her private practice in 2004 to help address this need. For the last 20 years, she's been serving Northwestern students in Evanston, Illinois. But it hasn't always been easy building a group practice for college students. Seasonality is especially difficult and there's a lot of client turnover. Business was good during the pandemic, but referrals have slowed down. This is an honest, vulnerable conversation about the realities of private practice.
