As we pause today to recognize our heroes, let’s also take a moment to Educate ourselves Our Veterans And those that support them From unscrupulous scammers and fraudsters who are taking advantage of our support and emotions for veterans. 𝑬𝒎𝒐𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏𝒂𝒍 𝒇𝒖𝒏𝒅𝒓𝒂𝒊𝒔𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒘𝒐𝒓𝒌𝒔. In an opinion piece written by Lt. Col John Start, US Army (ret,), he details the FTC case against a former candidate for mayor in Orlando, FL who ran a $20 million phony charity called Help the Vets. Lt. Col Stark currently serves on the advisory board of a ratings service called Charities for Vets focusing only on nonprofits that promise to help US military veterans. The service shows which veterans’ charities are fraudulent, or wasteful, or sit on enormous stockpiles of money without deploying it as they promise. Charities for Vets promotes charities that do provide America’s bravest with health care, housing, education, career counseling and service animals. Charities are rated “Recommended”, “Not Recommended”, or “Highly Recommended”. As of this Veteran's Day, Charities for Vets identified 41 Not Recommended charities.
