About us
The D.C. Courts are comprised of the District of Columbia Court of Appeals, the Superior Court of the District of Columbia (DC Superior Court) and the Court System, which provides administrative support to both courts. The D.C. Courts are the third branch of the District of Columbia government. The mission of the DC Courts is: To protect rights and liberties, uphold and interpret the law, and resolve disputes peacefully, fairly and effectively in the District of Columbia. The DC Court of Appeals has nine judges, and several senior judges, and sits in panels of three to hear appeals from decisions of the DC Superior Court and District agencies. The DC Superior Court has 61 associate judges, 24 magistrate judges, a number of senior judges and a chief judge. Magistrate Judges are selected by the Superior Court's board of judges. Associate Judges are selected by the President of the United States from a list of three sent to the White House for each vacancy. The Senate holds hearings and then votes on confirmation. All judges live in the District of Columbia.

Callie Coffman serves as the government affairs manager for the DC Courts. She’s been at the forefront of working with federal and local legislatures, and the White House. Before joining the Courts, she spent over 20 years on Capitol Hill. “I had an internship at the Government Accountability Office and had two free months in DC that I needed to fill. So, my academic advisor at the University of Michigan said she knew someone on Capitol Hill,” she says. Unsure if that was the right path, Callie began to work with a member of Congress from her hometown of Flint, Mich. After Callie completed college, she was offered a full-time position in D.C. on the Hill. After many years on the Hill, the member of Congress who she was working for retired. A colleague then shared a posting for a newly created position of government affairs manager at the DC Courts. “The best way to describe my position is I keep track of what’s going on, on both ends of Pennsylvania Avenue – so, the Congress and the D.C. Council,” she states. Callie also plays a major role in the process of filling judicial vacancies at the Courts, specifically associate judges. She continues to work behind the scenes to ensure these vacancies are filled - and to fulfill the Courts’ mission and vision. Thank you, Callie, for all you do for the Courts!
